Big American BB IMD vs Mid Tier European Sales summer offers - Want to work on buy-side

Hey everyone, I have two offers. One from probably the biggest american investment bank, in its investment management division, and my role will be more of a fund of funds. (I've had the offer for a while now), But a couple of days ago I receieved an offer from a mid tier european IB for its sales dept. both for summer internships.

Eventually I want to work on the buy-side, maybe running my own hedge fund.

The money in the short term is not really an issue for me, but for long term compensation and career opportunities, i was wondering which is the better offer to take.

Thanks, Curtis.

and sorry for not mentioning the banks name, i want to keep a certain amount of Anonymity. I hope i have given you an idea though.

Thanks Leverage. But i've been warned against working for FoF several times. It wouldn't be a rotational programme but alternative investments at probably the biggest BB out there? Can you share any insight into a long term future in that industry.

Thanks, Curtis

FoF= no transferable skills.

The answer to your question is 1) network 2) get involved 3) beef up your resume 4) repeat -happypantsmcgee WSO is not your personal search function.

Thanks for the replies so far...

Like the title says, would you take GS, to be a product manager in GSAM or institutional sales at top european bank. SA position!

Thinking about long term, where i can make the most money, best opportunities to move to top hedge funds etc... Basically $$$ over next 10-15 years

I've heard institutional sales earnings potential is vast, plus talking to PM's all day, if you're any good by the time your 30 could bag yourself a top buyside job.

Obviously GS is GS. But worried that it is mainly FOF work.

Any thoughts....

To be honest, both aren't ideal. They won't be giving you exposure to the investment side of things. By that I mean, you won't actually be analysing stocks or bonds as such.

Personally, I would go with the FoF position. It'll give you exposure to the markets and you'll still be working in the 'right' industry. If you network well, I don't see why you can lateral into an IM position.

HFFBALLfan123Why don't you start another thread asking this question, 3 isn't enough.

As there isn't a general forum, I just thought, different forums have different users, and hence posted on all the relevant ones. If you have any advice regarding the question that would be fantastic.

Thanks, Curtis

Thanks for the advice. Will be sure to look at recently posts now.

Sales, the investment management is alternative investments at probably the biggest BB?
