Boston College MSF program reviews

Hi guys,

I got the offer from Boston college MSF this year. BC is def a great school, its undergrad finance program is the top. But I'm not sure about the MSF program, anybody has any ideas on the employment data or any insights? Please share. BC doesn't publish that data and I couldn't find any info on Internet as well?

Thank you very much!

I wouldn't go if I were you. Do you have any other options?

I was admitted with a $15k scholarship and fellowship but turned them down due to their lack of transparency with placements.

I sent them a list of 20-25 names of firms all in Boston and asked them to connect me with an MSF graduate from any of them and they couldn't even do that. On the employment report they list Wellington Management as an employer and when I asked them to connect me with that person they said she had moved firms since then to a HF in NYC. I said that I would still love to talk to her and they never responded to me after that request. All of my LinkedIn searched turned up people in BO jobs at small companies and people who didn't get jobs out of the MSF program (never found the girl at the HF either). I also spoke with several students in the program in November/December who thought they were going to be able to recruit for IB during the spring and a graduate of the program who said almost nobody was going to FO finance positions otherwise they would publish their placements.

I think they capitalize on the BC name and there are no MSF centric recruiting events. Everything I found was tailored to the MBA's or UG's. The admissions team is really nice and so was career services I just didn't think they gave me the full picture which is why I chose another program (BC was my 1st choice when applying).

Not the OP, but if you don’t mind me asking, where did you end up going?

Duke, I got more scholarship $ and I think the brand name is stronger. The program at Duke has its faults for sure and is nowhere near perfect, however going in admissions, career services, current students, and alumni all told me its strengths and weaknesses so that I could make up for the program's shortcomings before arriving on campus. My program also provided comprehensive career reports going back 10 years so I had an idea of what placements looked like over a long period of time.

BC wasn't willing to do the same which is why I didn't feel comfortable spending $40k to go to school there and pay rent in Boston. If they were to do this in the future they could become a top 5 MSF program IMO. MIT is the only program that could beat them out on location, brand, etc. Vandy, UT-Austin, and WUSTL are all in places with limited finance opportunities compared to a city like Boston. Vandy places great because it's an incredibly well-run program but I think if you put the same infrastructure in place at BC they would overtake them in a couple of years just based on the size of BC's alumni network, proximity to finance opportunities (Boston is a huge investment management town and closer to NYC than all of them except Nova).

Don't want people to think I'm hating BC though because it's a good school. If it were BC undergrad I would tell you to go no questions asked and even have a family member studying finance there next year, but the grad school is nowhere near the level as UG and there is no disputing that.

Hi,

Thank you for your response. Duke is a great school, congrats!

I got the same scholarship and the assistantship position which encourage me to join BC. As you mention, BC is a huge name that I had no doubt when I applied, I did not even do much research because of that. But now when I looked up on Linkedin, I found the same thing as you did. I tried to match up the employer names on the BC website to their alumni Linkedin profiles but didn't find anything like that. I sent their career services email asking about the employment stats, she admitted to me that the employment rate went down drastically since 2016. It makes no sense to me because BC undergrad and MBA are doing very well. However, as an international student, taking that much of a loan and unclear outcome, I think I won't join BC even though it would be a pity *sad*.

I also got admitted to Stevens Tech Master in Financial Engineering, this school has a lower ranking than BC in general but their MsFE program is quite good. I want to work as a quant or a research analyst. You have any ideas about this school? Oh and I also got into Brandeis MSF, but the remaining tuition still 60k after deducting the scholarship. It is kinda out of my budget so I won't be able to join either.

Thank you!

I have no idea about the Stevens MFE programs in general but I think the BC brand is much stronger. Don't go to Brandeis its a step or two down from a brand perspective compared to BC.

Are you dead set on an MSF? I'd honestly wait and apply next year if I were you to see if you can get into stronger programs or try to get a job that would allow you to get into a top MBA program in 4-5 years. I just don't think Stevens and Brandeis are good enough brands to move the needle for what you want to do and while BC is a strong enough brand they punch far below their weight with the MSF degree. Just trying to be completely honest and not trying to discourage you. Nothing is impossible but I would characterize your chances of getting where you want to be out of these as highly improbable especially if you have little or no relevant work experience.

thank you for your advice. I appreciate that. I can't wait till next year because I already skipped 1 year (last year) due to the pandemic. I gotta go this year though. BC is really a strong name, that makes me want to go there so bad :)) but their MSF is really punching far below their weight as you said. Such a dilemma!. Stevens has an advantage of location, very close to NYC. That school is not famous for business but its tech/business analytics program is very good. that contributes to the Financial engineering program. I also found a bunch of alumni working on the street (from Linkedin). The replacement rate within 3 mons after graduation is usually above 80% for the fact that most of the students are international, average starting salary is ok too. It's not too bad to go to Stevens now even though it's not an ideal option at all. But at least, I'm not too worried about the employment outcome. But still thinking of BC. really hard to make a decision.
