Career Path to CRE

Hello all, I'm going to be a senior upon returning to school in the fall. I'm currently a Finance and Real Estate major at Indiana University. For my junior year summer internship, I'll be working as a Credit Analyst Intern at a company (corporate finance), but this is not what I truly want to do as getting a real estate internship for the summer didn't pan out for me.

I'm wondering what my options are as far as spinning this internship towards real estate, and the potential positions this would translate to. I have been reading the forums and will continue to, but I haven't really found anything super helpful that relates to my situation. I have been reaching out to people already within my network, but there are very knowledgeable people on this site that I would also like to get opinions from.

Thank you.

Honestly, why try and spin an internship? That just looks fake and is very silly. You are a REAL ESTATE major, I think you can safely apply for real estate jobs your senior year and be taken seriously. If I am reading this wrong, I apologize, but it almost sounds as if you are somehow concerned that a corp fin summer internship will somehow dictate your career path???? And you have to find a "spin" to get a real estate job??

Just add it to your resume as you would any job, go forth and apply for the next one. Totally missing what the issue here to be honest.

Well, I wouldn't make assumptions that a real estate employer would discount or devalue a finance internship, having diverse experience can actually be a good thing.

You are beyond overreacting, you are making something that is a positive (an internship, in corp fin no less), into some form of a negative. It's not. Consider that there are people getting zero internships...... your life/career is not this easily made nor broken!

If you haven't already, take REFM BIWS or ACRE so you know how to model a deal. When they ask you about the corporate internship just be honest, and then say how you went and did X Y and Z to learn more about CRE in your spare time in addition to the internship. Network with people who are alumni and work locally... You'll be good to go. You're way ahead of where I was in college in terms of career planning. Don't stress it, it's your last year of undergrad after all

I did this from the same school you’re at

I went from commercial banking junior year internship at a top 10 commercial bank to a Large Life Co on the CRE equity side.

Totally doable. The classes at iu teach you the basics about real estate which is what will come up when interviewing. Obviously pay attention in class and ask questions.
