Career Switch: Aerospace Engineer to Hedge Fund Analysts
Hi guys,
I need some advice on how to break into the hedge fund industry. I am currently a Project/ Aerospace engineer at Lockheed. currently pursuing a masters degree in Finance from Harvard University Extension school. Have been trading currencies and etf options for a couple years. Selected to participate at investment contest (creating a portfolio) sponsored by the Tiger group.
I really enjoy trading and investing. I would not mind trading for a few years but my ultimate goal is to do some portfolio management. What advice/ career path do you guys recommend? Thanks in advance!
In your position, I know this sounds simple but this is what I would do. I would just start calling hedge funds that you are interested in and just talk to them. Ask them if they would be interested in hiring someone like you in the future. Also, just start conversations with them so that they know you. The key here is to expand your network. The larger your network is of hedge funds who know you, the easier it will be for you to get a job later. Get hedge fund managers to know you, that is the first step. That will make your life easier later on.
When you say reach out to them, do you mean the HR team or the PMs themselves via LinkedIn or similar?
