Chances of an Investment Banking Role after Pre-med

As an aspirant investment banker, my intention is to acquire high-quality work experience to strengthen my prospects of entry into a reputable M7 MBA program. I majored in Economics, as an undergraduate from a top-30 university in the U.S, and I have yet to sit the GMAT. Upon graduating from university, I interned at various investment banking firms in hopes to secure a full-time job offer; however, before I was even able to take any initiative, I was accepted into a Post-Baccalaureate Pre-Medical program at an Ivy League university. Thus far, I have completed the required science coursework for medical school; however, I am starting to question my future in such a profession, i.e. years of schooling, and residency, and non-dischargeable debt are all hurdles that I would have to overcome before I start to make real money as a doctor. Hence, I am strongly considering to reenter finance; however, what are my chances of landing an investment banking analyst role at this stage? I know that I will need to acquire full-time work experience before I even start to entertain the option of Business School, and I will need to work at a bulge-bracket firm to secure admission at an M7 MBA program. Would I be able to leverage the reputation and clout of my university to network my way into banking? Will my pre-medical coursework speak any volume on my resume? Would I have any chance at a Bulge Bracket firm after completing pre-medical coursework at an Ivy League University? If not, what would be the best strategy to break into banking at this stage?

Please do not dispraise me if any words of encouragement cannot be offered.

Any feedback would be much obliged.

Try to craft a cohesive story that shows you have specific aspirations and something specific to gain from the MBA over worrying about landing a job at a BB (not the only way into an MBA business schools ">M7, might even be more difficult than other non-traditional paths). Your current story seems really wishy-washy which is more likely (but not necessarily guaranteed) to get you dinged than anything else. If you want to go MBA business schools ">M7 (or even top 20) I would recommend not do the post bac and get a job in business (or even Peace Corps / TFA or something), or finish to post bac and do an MD/MBA (might be a waste of money if you know you already don't want to practice medicine).

Premedical coursework does not matter on your resume, but the economics coursework probably has value.

Definitely leverage your university's reputation and network with bankers, see if you can find others with a Liberal Arts background from your school.

There isn't a large enough sample size of people who did a premed post bac than went into IB. By 24-25 you should really be on a more focused track.

Thank you for your thorough reply. Really appreciate your arguments. Especially about the fact of being "on a more focused path by 24-25". You really seem to know what you're talking about.

Quick question though, about the likelihood that the premed postbac will do more harm than good: even if it's at an Ivy League University? So here, the school's brandname wouldn't help at all for CV screenings etc.?

Some of those postbac premed programs are in fact degree-granting.

First example that comes to mind: Harvard Medical School's (HMS) 2-year Master in Medical Sciences in Immunology (MMSc IMM).

When this program was launched, the HMS faculty published an article in which they indicated that the degree was a good choice for prospective venture capitalists (VC).

The 2-year program is a 1-year full academic coursework and a 2nd year of full research, within HMS' prestigeous scientific research laboratories.

A chance to network with the healthcare and life science finance people in Cambridge and Boston during that period would be worth the total $120k cost of attendance in your opinion?
