Changing Venue of Interview
If you have an interview for a video conference or phone interview, is it acceptable to ask for an in person interview?
I have a video conference interview for an out of state position. I'm thinking of saying something like "I'm going to be in that area next week visiting family and would like to get a better feel for XYZ city, can we do an in person?" I'm thinking this is a good idea because 1) it shows them I have family in the area, 2) I do better interviews in person than over video conference, and 3) I'm serious about the position.
No, this is not acceptable. The point of the video interview is because the company does not have time at this stage to interview every single candidate in-person. While you probably do not mean this, your request would imply that you think that you are better than the other candidates or deserve preferable treatment.
I can definitely see it coming off that way. I read somewhere that it's good to pull the visiting family in the area trick when interviewing for government jobs. I guess they care about you knowing people in the area if you're from out of state. That, or my anonymous source from a government jobs forum doesn't know what he's talking.
