Choosing B over MB?

Hi,

I was lucky enough to receive an offer from one of the B's, but I am still interviewing with M and the other B (respectively final and second round).

However, the B where I received an offer was my favorite choice to begin with based on work done in the specific office, culture, the people I would be working with and some other considerations. Thus, my decision would not change if I would get an offer from M or other B.

My questions would be, what would be most professional:

a) Finishing all inteviews with MB because they are scheduled already
b) Cancelling the interviews because it would be a waste of time for everybody involved.

I initially got an offer from M, and then used it to expedite the interview process with one of the B's, which was my first choice. Interviewing when you already have an equal offer is much more fun, cause you're able to relax (stakes are much lower now). Got the offer from B and am now working there.

But if you already have an offer from your first choice, doesn't make much sense to go through with the other interviews. Maybe if you wanted to leverage the other offer to get some additional points from your first choice (like a relocation support bonus, or maybe transferring your offer to a better office or something).

Canceling an interview because you have accepted an offer is no big deal. I did it once i accepted my PE offer out of my MBA program, and actually cancelled a few second rounds before that when I knew I wouldn't accept their offer anyway.

The key is to be courteous. Tell them you appreciate their consideration but you have already committed to another firm and you feel strongly that you should honor that (or something along those lines). They are going to get their headcount anyway so they won't care.

I agree with some of the other posters, if you are absolutely certain that you want to work for the firm that already extended an offer, you can cancel the rest of the interviews. If not, use your offer to speed up the process so you can make your decision.

Just wondering, did you participate in ocr or apply off-cycle? I didn't think interviews were usually scheduled in April/May.

Agree with everybody that you should cancel the other interviews if you are sure you'll accept. Let somebody else get the spot - its good karma man.

If I were you I would definitely do the interviews and to the best of your abilities. This is obviously the route that requires more work but you never know where you are going to be down the line. If you do the interviews, make a good impression, you can keep up with the connections and if for whatever reason things down work out at your current firm you can contact them. This is especially the case if you're coming in out of undergrad.

Do the interviews.

I know at least one of MBB tracks who they made offers to, and getting an offer later is easier if you've gotten one before.

You never know if you'll want to switch firms.

Disagree with this here. Interned at an MBB and we had a cross-offer at our offerree weekend who had an offer from another MBB, which he accepted over us. When he did not get an offer from that firm at the end of the summer, my MBB did not give him an interview. Who wants to know that they were your second choice? I think you may not develop the same sort of resentment/bad blood from the firm if you turn them down before they want you. I agree with other posters -- let everyone else know you've accepted a position and take the offer you already love.

Congrats on the offer!

I'd go ahead and do the other interviews anyway. There's no pressure on you so might actually enjoy them plus you'll have the potential upside: - Meeting some interesting people - Making it easier for you to move sideways at a later date (always good to have options) - Maybe having your mind changed (from the above it sounds like you're pretty certain but you never know, maybe the offerees weekend away trip could change your mind)

If you go ahead and do this, I'd suggest asking the other M & B to move your interview dates forward because you have another offer (it's helpful to show them that you're wanted elsewhere...)

I previously worked for McKinsey in London and have started a blog about consulting and how to get into it at www.theconsultingcoach.com

College junior myself at a target. I saw quite a few friends who cancelled interviews with other firms the M and B who later regretted the decision. I say its too early to know which firm you want to work at definitively since you have not met everybody yet and try to go through with all interviews before deciding.
