Pandemic over? CNN - More than 80% of Americans 16 and older have some immunity to coronavirus, blood survey finds

More than 80% of Americans 16 and older have some immunity to coronavirus, blood survey finds - CNN

Congratulations everyone. Sounds like herd immunity has been achieved. To those of you who have already gotten the vaccine, I solute you. I sincerely hope that nothing happens over the long-term and that the US government will remove protections from the pharma companies if something does.

So, can we declare the pandemic over? Start going back to real life? Do you think the government will release some of the temporary restrictions they have implemented and reduce their control over people's daily lives?

Of course not. Because there's the spooky Delta variant. Then the terrifying Epsilon variant. And after that there will be Foolmefourtimes variant because the governments don't want this to end because they love the power and have overseen the single largest wealth transfer in history. But I do think that this is positive news overall. What about y'all?

Sep. 02 is actually the first day in a long time that the 7-day moving average in new daily cases has gone down, so it stands to reason that r-naught is rather close to 1 right now. If it were to stay indefinitely below 1, then we would reach the condition you're talking about, so you might be a couple replication cycles early. Things are looking good right now on a prospective basis.

53% of the US population is fully vaccinated. While the official case count across the US is 40.5MM, it's estimated that far more people have had it because of the asymptomatic nature of many infections. Forbes reported that 1 in 3 Americans had had COVID-19 by the end of 2020, so I think we could conservatively say 40% now at least (assuming that Forbes overdid it a bit). Assuming some overlap with people getting vaccinated after having been infected, and the 80% figure is certainly plausible. I hope we see r-naught drop like a rock and see really low case counts. Lockdowns are certainly not warranted under present conditions or currently anticipated future conditions. Get your vaccines, folks.

https://www.nytimes.com/2021/08/28/us/florida-coronavirus-covid-19-vacc…

A thousand people are dying every day in Florida and seniors in that state are 85% vaccinated, so that may not be enough.  The Delta variant is good at finding vulnerable populations.

The Delta variant is real.  The Epsilon variant is real.  They are deadlier and spread faster than normal COVID and are not made up by the government.  If people stay unvaccinated there will be many more deadly strains since mutations occur as the virus spreads.

I think governments do want it to end.  Biden's approval went down a lot due to this new wave and it could fuck him up in the midterms if he doesn't get it under control by then.  I don't think they're rubbing their hands together and laughing maniacally because they made some people wear masks.

It truly amazes me how incoherent the ramblings of those who believe Covid is still relevant are.

You say that despite a 85% vaccination rate among seniors, they're still dying. Governments in America and Europe have abandoned since several weeks the narrative that vaccination reduces the spread of Covid, because it doesn't and vaccinated people get infected as easily as the unvaccinated. The new narrative is that it makes you less likely to have serious complications if you get infected. We therefore conclude that the share of the population that is vaccinated is irrelevant. I checked the statistics, and it is indeed true that around 85% of the people over 75 are vaccinated. I won't fact-check your claim that a thousand people are dying everyday but I'll take it as an assumption.

  • Either these deaths are natural in this age group
  • Or the vaccine is ineffective at protecting against serious complications following an infection

Now you tell us that "variants" can somehow be both deadlier AND more contagious at the same time. It's like arguing that the sun revolves around the earth. A virus that kills it host more often will spread less. The Sweating sickness which appeared in 1485 killed the infected in just a few hours. This deadly disease vanished forever and doesn't exist anymore, because it killed its hosts before allowing them to infect other people. The common cold however, despite being very contagious, is absolutely not deadly, and that's how it managed to survive for so long.

And then you tell us that unvaccinated people create "deadly strains". I already explained why you were absolutely incorrect in claiming that new strains were more deadly, since they can't be both extremely contagious and more deadly, but let's assume that you meant to say that the unvaccinated create strains. Once again, this thinking shows how ignorant you are of everything related to natural sciences - maybe you should stick to computer science.

A vaccine makes it harder for a virus to survive. When a vaccinated person gets infected, the virus is faced with a natural selection pressure that it would only go through over a period of decades if not centuries in its natural state. The vaccine kills the weakest viruses, but some of them which had genetic defects survive because these mutations give them an advantage. That's what is meant by "natural selection": those who can't adapt to the new environment die, and the individuals who had an useful mutation survive. I'll let you read the story of the Marek's disease in chickens: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marek's_disease . Vaccination led a virus with a 5% death rate to mutate into a virus with a 100% death rate.

To add a bit of ad-hominem, I have to say Drumpfy that proving you wrong is not difficult, because you simply regurgitate the current narrative promoted on TV.

Open your eyes: the lockdown has turned fear into a virtue. Those who are afraid believe they're better people that those who aren't, and will subconsciously look for ways to multiply fear, because it's they're virtue.

Nope.  Both of those statements are completely wrong.

Only 7 COVID deaths in Florida have been to fully vaccinated people

https://www.wfla.com/community/health/coronavirus/7-fully-vaccinated-co….

3 times as many people died of COVID in August as in July in the US.  That's not natural.

https://usafacts.org/visualizations/coronavirus-covid-19-spread-map/sta… - Overall stats for Florida

The number of people dying per day AT ITS HIGHEST was still below 300. The deaths per day in the ENTIRE UNITED STATES is currently under 2,000. So, you're just a dirty fucking liar and a massive idiot? Good to know, thanks for making it obvious to everyone. There have been ~45,000 deaths total in FL. In a state of population of over 21 million with THE largest senior citizen population in the country. So in other words, completely statistically irrelevant. But you keep sucking up the shit the NYT and the rest of your media spews because they're desperate to keep you tuned in. You're so pathetic man, truly, get help. The only reason you could be this scared with as young as you are is if you're either some fat fuck or have a bunch of underlying health conditions, in which case just get the vax and a prescription for Vicodin so you chill the fuck out.

Also, no one is denying that the new variants are real dumbass. But it is yet another bold-faced lie to say that they are deadlier. They simply are not, they are just more virulent. Viruses evolve in one direction or the other, not both. I admit though there's one way I could be wrong. Since it's most likely a man-made virus from the Wuhan Lab, perhaps they gave it evolutionary capabilities it wouldn't otherwise have in nature. But in that case, it's time to start addressing China and imprisoning/executing anyone in our own government who was involved in its development.

"45,000 dead people is now statistically irrelevant."

Anti-mask/vaccine people are psychopaths.  When has 45,000 dead people ever been irrelevant?  Especially when it was all completely preventable.  All you had to do was get a shot and wear a piece of cloth on your face.  Keep in mind, Vietnam had 58,000 US soliders KIA

See this is the thing with you. You think this is a war. It's not. Not even close. And it is so profoundly insulting for you to compare tens of thousands of Americans being sent to their deaths to fight an unethical and pointless war (a la Afghanistan) to a public health crisis. They are not in any way shape or form comparable and to try and do so is a shocking display of ignorance. People die all the time of disease. People slip and fall in their bathtub and die, does that mean the government should mandate all tubs have a slip-proof mat in them? Over 30,000 people die per year in car accidents, should the government make all speed limits 10 mph so that can't happen anymore? No, because that's not how life works. How many people die a year of heart disease? How about the flu? Should the government ban unhealthy foods and mandate flu shots? Of course not.

YOU DO NOT HAVE A GUARANTEE OF SAFETY IN LIFE BECAUSE YOU ARE FREE TO CHOOSE WHAT RISKS YOU TAKE.

The number of people that are dying of covid, while tragic, is statistically irrelevant. The people who want the vaccine have gotten it. If you're scared even after getting the vaccine, then get a remote work job and stay home. The people who don't are apparently willing to take the risk of catching covid and dying so why the fuck do you care? You don't. You pretend to, because you're a virtue-seeking scumbag just like many of your fellow liberals. You think that "because I care" is excuse enough to force others into your compliance and to do what you want so that you get to feel safe.

You didn't even address the fact that I called you out for a bold-faced lie because you can't. Because deep down you know you're just a filthy little liar who's terrified of what the real world is after existing in your university bubble. You will never address the damage that the lockdowns have done, the massive rise in suicide amongst the youth. In what world does it make sense to protect the elderly by destroying the lives of children? In what world does it make sense to protect retirees by obliterating the economy of people still in their working prime, many of whom face little to no risk from Covid if they're vaccinated (or are willing to take the 99.9% chance of survival risk), and need to produce in order to be able to fund the very social security payouts the former receives from the government? It fucking doesn't. It's never been about safety. It's been about empowering the single largest global transfer of wealth in human history. And that's how I KNOW you're both fucking stupid and disingenuous, because if you were actually left-wing you would focus on that.

You can't/won't acknowledge any of this because your brain has been reduced to mush by continuous cortisol bombardment caused by the doom and gloom of the media. I almost pity you. But then I remember you're part of the problem propagating literal disinformation about the status of this pandemic, so fuck you and the self-righteous horse you rode in on.

When have there been over 1K COVID-19 deaths in a day in Florida? Never been more than 300. This is hogwash.

Delta and Epsilon are real. Epsilon and Lambda have been demonstrated to be less contagious than the Delta variant, so I think we have little to fear from them. Delta spreads faster than the original COVID-19 strains that we saw.

Delta is also less deadly as per it being more virulent. No virus evolves to become both more transmissible and more deadly. That's simply not how it works, and anyone saying otherwise is either ignorant or a liar.

Thousands of hospitals are overwhelmed with cases, Emergency rooms are full and K12 schools haven't resumed yet in much of the Northeast, which will cause another spike when they open. No, the pandemic is nowhere near over; you have plenty of time to catch it. Then when you are home you can work on your spelling.

Tucker Carlson and co. are killing thousands of their own viewers just to drum up a culture war even though he and all his fox colleagues are vaccinated themselves.  It's really sad.

This isn’t sad. This is the most beautiful example of Darwinism playing out right in front of our eyes. The dumbest people in the world are taking themselves out of the gene pool. Would be a beautiful fitting end to the MAGA movement.

This is a shining example of how unbelievably retarded you are and how pathetically partisan this virus is. Have they EVER asked you about your political affiliation when you go into the hospital? Of course not, because they do not even track that data. You think a picture of a tweet from a tv celebrity/physicist is coherent commentary on medicine? Truly outstanding job.
