college intern/job offer from megafund, no connections
Is this possible? I heard some Wharton sophomore (chinese guy, M&T) did an internship with TPG. How can a college students get into a megafund that doesn't traditionally recruit undergrads without personal connections?
You said "you heard", so how do you know he has no connections whatsoever?
Also, what does being a Chinese guy have to do with anything lol.
Being a chinese guy means 90% chance he had connections.
What...? Not sure how many Chinese people you see as senior partners at PE shops or senior MD's at banks but I sure don't see many. Unless this was for TPG Asia...
Why does this even matter? Don't worry about other people, focus on yourself.
Yeah, I was going to say. Aren't most Senior Partners/ MD's smart white dudes? Alpha males?
His connection may not necessarily be a partner, but perhaps an important client or high level official that can exert a lot of influence. I agree in the US it happens a lot less often, but nevertheless exists.
being chinese probably has nothing to do with it, being M&T does though. M&T alumni are very helpful in finding you internships/jobs. But other than that, why do you care?
Was he in one of TPG's Asia offices? Could have gotten in with connections that way. Plus, how can you be sure he didn't know anyone at TPG? Sounds a bit unlikely.
