Comprehensive buy-side breakdown

I’m about to begin as FT at an EB and have begun thinking about buy-side opportunities. I think my background may lend itself to HF’s but I’m also interested in PE shops. Can someone give a comprehensive breakdown on different HF’s (e.g. value, activist, macro etc.) and PE shops (e.g. MF, MM etc). Would love to hear why someone might go one route vs. the other. Would also like to hear some of the brand names in each category (e.g. KKR and BX for MF PE). Thanks.
