If you really want to control your dreams, check out this book: http://www.amazon.com/Exploring-World-Dreaming-Stephen-LaBerge/dp/034537410X/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1391552212&sr=8-2&keywords=lucid+dreaming

After a few weeks of practice, I've made dreams my bitch...

And some of the apps work decently well, but you will only really get results if you've practiced lucid dreaming before. Otherwise you simply won't recognize you're in a dream.

Best tip I can give you, ask yourself once an hour "am I dreaming?" Don't half-ass that. Seriously ask yourself and test it somehow. If you don't ask "am I dreaming?" while you're awake, you certainly won't remember to ask that while you are asleep. A few tips for testing if you are awake or asleep:

Read text, look away, then read it again. If the words change when you look back, you're probably dreaming. I carry a playing card around with me (a joker) and I wrote "Am I dreaming?" at the top. I read it a couple times a day.

Look at your hand. I often get fuzzy fingers when I'm dreaming, and occasionally more or less than 5 fingers.

Try putting one hand through the other. Your skin will likely feel very elasticy while dreaming.

Try to put your hand gently through glass (window, glass table, whatever).

Look in a mirror. If you do it while dreaming, something will definitely be off (e.g. face is blurry, expressions are weird, you don't look like yourself, you don't show up in the mirror at all.. which could also mean you're a vampire, I suppose)
