Do you have a personal laptop?
I work for a pretty small company now and don’t have a problem using my work laptop for personal use. I’ll be starting at a BB soon and I’m wondering if I should get a personal laptop. I don’t do much but casually browse/shop/stream so nothing to worry about. Thoughts?
Honestly I use my work laptop 99% of the time. Compliance isn't going to care if you're online shopping or planning your next vacation. I keep my old laptop from college around for exit opp searching purposes, but it's too infrequent to justify buying a new laptop imo. If you watch a lot of Netflix/Hulu/etc. you might use it more though (I'm not a huge TV show person).
I hate to bash but how is this a real question? Yes, get a personal laptop. Where do you even keep / work on your resume or other personal items? If you get laid off you want to still have access to those types of files after they take your work laptop away. And some sites may be firewalled by the firm, but you’ll still want to access them.
I’ve heard mixed opinions. I do all that on my work laptop (including resume/job search/interviews) but only since wfh. My current company is pretty small with no oversight on that kind of stuff. You’re right though, I’ll definitely get a personal one going forward, thanks!
Good call. Good luck in your new role!
So you watch porn on your work laptop?
I have several personal laptops (some in need of repair, but working) and several Raspberry Pi. It is annoying to switch machines, but for private things I'd do it anyway.
One aspect: corporate firewall will not allow any access to google services like gmail, etc. so a lot of services would be missing on the corporate one.
also, my personal machines are all Mac.
Of course. I like macbooks they’re easier to carry and connect to all your devices. Also, when you want to get out of your job or login to your bank account, you dont want to do that through your work computer. I think compliance blocks access to many social websites as well. It doesn’t have to be super expensive but it is definitely a good thing to have
Good point. I’ll look into getting a MacBook since all my devices are apple as well. Thanks!
Can you actually access anything on your work laptop? My firm blocks almost everything, Facebook, YouTube, etc etc..... I was doing some research on BAT who are a client and absolutely everything was blocked cos tobacco. Had to do it on my personal phone in the end lol
Pretty much, I’ve seen coworkers browse Facebook and YouTube in the office. Like I said, our compliance isn’t that strict!
Lol your firm treats you like children. YouTube, Reddit, etc. are incredibly helpful tools especially for things like troubleshooting and analytics, crazy that some IT person thought that restricting content for a professional services firm is a good idea
You should definitely buy yourself a personal laptop. I don't know about you, but in our company you can't take your work laptop home and it really pisses you off!
Damn, not even at the end of the workday? I can take my work laptop home whenever I want, but a lot of our corporate portal and certain documents aren't stored locally, and are only accessible for viewing and modification through a private Wi-Fi server, so we have to physically be in the office. It has an 'AlwaysOnVPN' built into it, but sometimes it'll still fuck you over. Can't tell you how annoying it is when I'm trying to get some work done at home, and can't access something so I have to text my MD to authorize offline access. I guess security is an issue, but I can remember multiple times where I've literally driven to the office at midnight, parked outside & connected to Wi-Fi, downloaded something, and went home. Crazy!
