Do you want to have a boss 10 years from now?
It seems like many people like working for larger corporations and taking a lot of shit from their bosses or MDs.
Is it worth it in the short lives that we have to be bored or miserable at work? How many of you actually enjoy your job or are learning a lot from it?
Are you doing this all for the paycheck and bonus? What would it take for you to start your own firm or business or even trade/invest stocks all day as an example in a city you actually want to live in?
Curious to know what everyone’s future plan is once they get older and do not want to work 70 hour weeks anymore and settle down. Monkey work really sucks.
Thoughts?
I am in a lucky spot to both love what I do and have a great chain of command that values my work. That has resulted in a fun career and I've been promoted in my company so its a win-win.
I've the done the self-employed route, the work-for-a-startup route, the contractor route, etc. Even if I had a bad boss now, I would still be corporate because of the things that come with it. Having a 401k is a good thing, not having to pay for self-employment taxes is a good thing, paid-for health insurance is a good thing. All those things only become more important as you get older and have more responsibilities (kids, wife, etc.). So, yeah, corporate life sucks, but keep saving, keep investing and retire as young as possible.
The one thing I learned from being an entrepreneur prior to my current corporate role is that you will always have a boss. Instead of your manager, it will just be your customers, investors, etc. You are answerable to someone until you reach a level of fuck you money where you are in a position to essentially quit your job at the drop of a hat with no reservations.
Eventually would love to start a business or small fund with good partners.
My thought process for now is to bank the monkey paycheck and come up with ideas on side. Trying to use all the exposure in IB to maximize connections to smart, connected, successful people.
IMO a strong network is KEY to success
Set up my own shop. Just working on the capital side right now. I have to work for myself or die trying.
I will be the boss 10 years from now
Depends on the person.
Does he want to spend more time with his family/dog/whatever live his life and have some security -> job he likes with decent (to low) pay with good hours and a boss
Does he want to take on a lot of stress running his own thing working basically none stop -> no boss high stress with the potential to get wealthy (assuming he didnt open a restaurant or hairdresser)
Personally, no. But it is scary as fuck to go out on your own
In 10 years I want to have a Board of Directors and Partners at my level, but not a direct boss.
To answer other Q's:
Don't love my job but learn a lot.
Doing this for the experience and knowledge first, the pay second. Not doing it because I enjoy it, not even a little bit.
It would take a good-sized nest egg in the low-mid 7 figures for me to branch out on my own.
Monkey work definitely does suck.
I’m trying to be retired in 10 years
