Does anyone even want content from Apple?

Hey monkeys,
I recently read about Apple's plans to create TV content in an effort to obtain market share in the streaming market.

Apple intends on producing original content for a new video streaming service with a budget of $1 billion.



A couple of years ago, news that Apple planned to spend $1 billion to produce original content would have sent a tremor through shares of Netflix NFLX -1.91% and media companies. On Wednesday, those stocks barely budged.

I think that even though Apple may face problems with creating content that users will want to see. Spending a lot of money and having good producers doesn't necessarily guarantee success with original programming. However, what is interesting is that other streaming services are spending upwards of $6 billion in hopes of creating popular original content.



Media companies already complain that Netflix is driving up the cost of content with its big spending ways. To get the best shows, Apple will have to spend even more, reducing the value of content ownership. And even if Apple can produce shows that people want to watch, the flood of high quality original content already hitting the market means stiff competition for consumers’ time and attention.

Netflix plans on spending $6 billion this year. Amazon plans on spending $4 billion and HBO plans on spending $2 billion.

I feel as if Apple is making a smart move in terms of managing their resources, however, they may drive into a dead end in show business. Apple has the means of distribution, yet, innovating entertainment can prove to be a problem.

What do you monkeys think of this business decision?
Is Apple managing their resources well?
Is this a money pit for Apple with minimal to no guaranteed returns?
I'm curious as to what your opinions are.

 

because they have too much cash to manage and want premium (overpriced) consumer electronics. Obviously beats has fallen out of favor and there seems to be no efforts given on actual synergies, but I'm sure they're still making decent $ on that....hardly the worst acquisition in the tech space

Hate on them all you want, but Dre Beats are one of the few electronic products that have lasted me 6-7 + years. I bought them when I was young and naive, and for all the wrong reasons. I don't like how they look and current me is constantly kicking past me for picking such absurdly bulky and BRIGHT red headphone. I mean I cant wear that shit in the office without asking for it. But for traveling, airplanes, work at home, the gym, they get the job done. They aren't the best looking, don't offer the best sound quality, and aren't noise canceling nor universal in their respective roles, but I'll be damned if they aren't the most durable headphones I'll ever buy.

No one wanted original stuff from Netflix and Hulu either until both started delivering damn good shows. If the programming is good, it'll be successful. If not, it won't be.

Would be interesting to see one of these companies like Apple actually have a focus for the content they create - such as Apple taking the lead in educational / children's content as every kid has an iPad/iPhone nowadays.

Not sure why I, or you, care what company owns the production of my TV shows. I don't like a TV show or movie based on what parent company produced it. Unless for some off the wall reason you think Tim Cook is going to be directing and writing scripts. The Dark Knight was a great movie and still would have been if Apple owned the company that produced it.

 

Apple has done a great many things during their lifetime. This company has turned numerous established industries on their head. I think Media and content is entirely within their reach, but I personally will not be subscribing.

After many years of being a part of Apple's closed (and expensive) ecosystem, and seeing how unfriendly they are with their products / warranties / AppleCare and services. I have truly grown to dislike Apple.

...All of the sudden you need AppleAir to connect to your AppleTv, and an Apple Remote w/ AppleRemote Charger to watch your Apple produced Shows... Which only work half the time because a link in the chain never connects to the cloud. When the product breaks your AppleCare policy doesn't cover... anything... so you have to fork over the purchase price in repairs, and take time off work to wait hours in some god forsaken mini-mall because the store is packed with all the other disgruntled Apple consumers who purchased their products that malfunctioned.

Why not save some time & money, and just go directly to hell.

It's interesting to me that you have had such a bad experience. I have had the exact opposite experience with their warranties and AppleCare + Services. I have an AppleTV, Apple Remote (Comes with the TV so I actually have 2 now), AppleRemote Charger (I have like 10 since they are the exact same charger as the iPhone....) Between me and my SO we have 3 iPads, 3 MacBook Pros, both use iPhones and connectivity is never an issue.

To watch their shows and movies I would assume you simply need an Apple TV, which comes with a remote and charger. My laptop, phone, and iPad all connect directly to each other when I enter the home.

That being said I actually personally know people who have had your exact experience so I think it's really random chance when it comes down to how a company deals with customers.

 

Most people I've spoken with are very polarized on the subject. Either they love (and own the whole gambit of products) or they despise their products and the company. I am also understandable to the fact that the company is so large there are bound to be inconsistencies with consumers. Most of the time it's not the ethos of the company but the customer service rep. However, in this particular case I can't believe I'm that unlucky haha.

I've been a loyal customer for more +10 years, but have dealt with too much BS over that 10 year duration. The closed loop ecosystem is great for linking devises and sharing information, but when you have a problem that Apple can't solve or AppleCare doesn't cover... you're simply out of luck. Not too dissimilar to when your car overheats on a dessert road next to the only maintenance-shop for miles, and the repairman charges you $1,000 for a bottle of Anti-freeze.

I don't care who makes the content, as long as it is good content and it reasonably priced. Premium services are producing historically great content with...

  • Showtime = Ray Donovan / Homeland / Billions
  • HBO = Game of Thrones / Ballers / Last Week Tonight / Silicon Valley / Veep
  • Amazon = The Grand Tour / Man in the High Castle
  • Netflix = House of Cards / Daredevil / Master of None / Unbreakable Kimmy Shmidt/ Orange is the New Black (Although I intensely dislike this show as it turns our horrendous legal+incarceration system into a entertainment show)
 

I sure as hell would rather subscribe to AAPL produced media if I liked it than pay for a cable/satellite TV subscription.

Currently, I am subscribed to Hulu/NFLX/AMZN/HBO and wouldn't mind adding AAPL if it had quality content as well.

I prefer subscribing to content providers that I personally enjoy and have the freedom to unsubscribe from at will, as opposed to the archaic and obsolete system of contracts and bundles that the old cable/satellite companies force people into. And once you subscribe, 99% of channels are loaded with a bunch of trashy low budget reality TV shows and other mind-numbing garbage.

~$40/mo -- this is in contrast to ~$60-$120/mo 1yr contracts required in order to purchase cable packages that provide quality content, and even then I'd probably still watch streaming more than cable.
