Dress Shirts For Athletic Builds

I've been working out and my regular shirts are becoming tight. I'm 5'11'' 180lb.

I normally wear a Charles Tyrwhitt Extra Slim Fit (15.5''/35''). I'd like to stay with the brand if I can, but my shirts are almost skin tight at this point in the chest, back, and shoulders.

If I stay with the Extra Slim Fit and go up to 16'' or 16.5'' in the neck, is the rest of the body larger as well? Or does just the neck change?

If I move to a regular Slim Fit, does it change more in the chest, back, and shoulders, or in the waist? I'm looking for a shirt that's very tapered, basically.

CT is the only brand I have experience with. If you have experience with others, please share. I live in Chicago, so if there's a local store that works too.

slim fit basically means less tapered for CT. How does the neck fit? if you size up on the neck and stay with the extra slim fit, the upper body will be bigger too, but proportionally the same. you can get the extra slim fit up a size and then have another set of darts put into the back or maybe look into bespoke or MTM. what kind of measurements are we talking about?

I could go up an inch in the neck. The proportions are good. I just need it bigger everywhere above the waist.

I measured my neck and it's 18''. But I can still button my 15.5'' with some difficulty. What's that about?

probably means the neck stretched out; from what i've seen, CT is usually pretty much spot on with neck size, if not smaller when first bought.

if that's the case, I'd just try going up in neck size while keeping the extra slim fit. i have the same kind of body shape as you, and it's a bitch shopping for clothes in america cause most people are fat. you could also look into MTM, but their price range starts around $60+ a shirt even if you get it made in HK/Asia and get it shipped over here. CT is pretty good about returns and if you buy on sale, you won't find much better quality for it's price range ($30-$40 per shirt).

I just measured myself and I have an 18'' neck and 44'' chest. But I can still button my 15.5'' shirts with some struggle. So should I try the extra slim 16.5'' neck CT shirt?

5'11" 180 lbs... go with 'Slim Fit' instead of 'Extra Slim Fit'

It's what I wear and they fit snug but super comfortable at 5'11" 185 lbs.

If a 15.5/35 fits properly in the sleeves and neck then that isn't the issue, get the different shirt shape.

So I dug up a cheap JCPenney shirt with a 17'' labeled neck that fit me well in the neck. I measured it and it's really more like 18.75''.

I then measured a 15.5'' labeled CT shirt and it's really closer to 17''.

I think I'm gonna buy a few 16.5'' extra slim fit CT shirts then.

Anyone have experience with their slacks? I'm going either with those or Bonobos. I like a mid-highish rise and a taper to no more than a 15'' leg opening.

a 15" leg opening isn't feasible unless you get MTM or tailoring from what i've seen (but this is a pretty simple job that can't really get screwed up unless you're making a huge taper vs the original leg opening. just know where you want the taper to start). I like mine right around yours too (more along 14", but I'm also a lot shorter than you).

Nah, you can definitely find off the rack pants with 14'' leg openings. It's pretty easy to find jeans with a nice taper. Levi 508s come to mind, but they have a lower rise than I like. I don't know how these kids wear skinny jeans without their dicks dying. My favorite jeans ever are a pair of Scotch & Soda Deans. Raw selvedge indigo with a button fly, mid-high rise, tapering to a 14'' opening. Got them on sale on Gilt last year.

You can find slacks with a nice taper too, but they tend to be from lame brands that try to be trendy and use nothing but polyester.

So the selection of CT shirts is real shitty right now. Anyone know when they re-up? Think they'll have a New Year's sale?

if you are going to spend ~$100 on an off-the-rack shirt, i would recommend you get one custom made instead. there are plenty of good tailors in ny.

I got all my CT shirts for like $30.
