Fall internships in I-banking (Washington D.C. Area)
I'm a senior graduating in December 2016 and I'm wondering if any of the major banks offer fall investment banking internships in the DC area. I have a solid resume and will be doing a summer internship but want to add one more solid internship before I graduate, ideally in investment banking or private equity. The challenge here is that the major banks (GS, JPM, MS) offer mostly PWM internships and I haven't heard of many fall internships. Is it worth aiming for the BB firms or should I focus on the boutique firms?
Focus on boutique and middle market shops. Locally FBR, FOCUS Bankers, Jeffries Quarterdeck and Baird come to mind.
Add houlihan and eastdil to that list. Also think Stifel and BB&T have offices around dc but not positive.
Banks in the DC area include: Houlihan Lokey (Aerospace, Defense & Gov, and Transportation & Logistics) Raymond James (Security, Defense & Gov) Baird (Real Estate) JP Morgan - Recently set up a middle-market shop, maybe a 3 or 4 person office Jefferies (4 person office) FBR & Co. (Not a lot of M&A, mostly 144a Boutiques: Signal Hill, Clearsight Advisors, McLean Group, KippsDeSanto, Outcome Capital, England & Co, Evergreen Advisors Capital, Focus, Seale & Co., Aronson Capital Partners, SC&H Capital, Chertoff Group,
Add BB&T (formerly Windsor) and Bluestone Capital Partners (A&D boutique).
To my knowledge, there is no BB&T office anymore. The guys at BB&T jumped ship to set up the Raymond James office at some point last summer.
Wow. It appears you are correct. Only ER and Corporate Banking in Mclean now.
BB&T has IB in Richmond which is 1-2 hours outside of DC depending on traffic. I think the focus primarily on industrials
A few other DC area banks:
Since you mentioned PE, 57stars is another place to check out.
Taylor-DeJongh is project finance-based, even if they claim to do M&A to attract unpaid interns. Most of the transactions involve IFC and governmental funding.
Thanks for pointing that out. Someone recommended the firm to me when I was looking for a junior year internship in IB, but Taylor-DeJongh told me they "only accept interns with MA degrees."
I believe Rothschild may also have an office there.
They do! It's tiny, though, and focuses on metals and mining.
There's a huge office here for The McLean Group on the other side of the river. FBR is pretty big too. Generally it's all gov. services, aerospace, and defense. You may want to broaden your search beyond the District, it's a really small community especially if you're not interested in the aforementioned spaces.
On the PE/HF side of things I'd set your expectations at next to 0. There are only a handful of shops (I can only name 5-6), and they're all small and very selective.

IMO if you do the SA gig and get a FT offer, I'd say enjoy your last semester of college. In the grand scheme that extra few months, working part time no less, is probably not going to do a lot for your overall career.
...
Novahill and FOCUS both take interns during the semester. Clearsight Advisors takes interns in the winter during break. Those are just ones I know for a fact. Hope this helps, good luck!
Edit: KippsDeSanto as well.
@Middle Market PE
On point list. That is really about the full extent of IB in DC (expanding to MD brings a few shops here and there including Stifel). Also on point that PE in the region is really not that extensive outside just a few shops.
