First Car for 1st Year IB
Hey WSO,
So I am moving away from home and I have been looking into getting a car (west coast requirement). I've basically narrowed it down slightly to the following cars:
Honda Civic EX-T Volkswagen Jetta 1.4 TSI Wolfsburg Nissan Sentra SV Toyota Corrolla S Upgrade Package CVT
**keep in mind this will only be my car for like two years until I can afford the dream car.
Thanks for your input!
wtf
Buy a used Honda and stop throwing money at rapidly depreciating assets.
Seriously what are you thinking? I bought a used car off my parents.
If you know you will only have the car for 2 years, do a short-term lease.
Why would you purchase a car only to end up selling in 2 years?
Get a crappy used car, AFTER having a mechanic check them out.
At this stage in your life there are much more satisfying things to spend your money on.
Get a lease for 2k down/2-300 per month for 3 years.
Buy a used Beamer or something damn
Agreed. Not sure about your location but in Canada you can find 5-6yo 328s for $10-13K. Even from a cost perspective, you're still coming out on top compared to the cars you've listed (assuming you're looking at new cars). Sure you might be using premium fuel (91 grade) but the marginal difference in fuel costs are likely to be less than $500-1K/year unless you plan on driving a huge amount. There is also the larger dip in resell value you'll experience if you buy a new car...
IMO, used bmw > new civic/corolla/"practical cars"
wtf... are you even counting maintenance costs or resale value? I agree that getting a used car is the best way to go but a used BMW? for 13k? height of financial idiocy.
Assuming LA, you're going to need a Rolls to get any of the models...
Go to CarMax and get a Civic or Corolla with a moderate amount of miles on it. Take it to the best independent mechanic in the area and ask for a used car inspection. If the car passes, buy it.
Once you have a full emergency fund, are maxing out your 401k, etc., maybe consider a luxury car.
Bus pass?
Hardly possible in LA.
Lmao unless you wanna get shot. Impossible to get around in that city without a car or insanely high uber bills
Also, just sayin'....

Back to my rusty honda.
All the rage right now are Vespas. Treat yoself.
You'll be hella cool.
Porsche or bust
Honestly, if you are living in southern california, I'd get a motorcyle. It is a lot cheaper to buy, cheaper gas, and it is one of a few places in the US where you can ride it year round.
Here's a nice, brand new Porsche that will fit your budget from a local dealer. You're welcome.
