Fitbit and Smart Watches/ Apple Watch for Work

What are your opinions on wearing the above in the office, are normal watches a thing of the past?

Is it acceptable, or is a regular watch the way to go?

I want to get a Fitbit, but given you're supposed to wear them 24/7, I would be giving up wearing normal watches ever again so I may reconsider.

As someone who has/had sleep issues, the sleep functionality was neat, but then, I didn't need the device to tell me that was not sleeping well. I got a PAP machine and love it. If you don't feel refreshed even when you get a full night of sleep, you should get a sleep study done. These days, you can do it at home.

As for calorie counting, I don't really remember. If you're not measuring your calorie intake, you don't need to measure our calorie outtake. If calorie counting interests you, I suggest downloading Lose It to track your calories. Being ripped is 90% calorie intake.

I think Apple Watches are great. The 3G version tracks fitness extremely well, streams music, and allows you to place/receive phone calls without your phone anywhere near by. My favorite function is the workout function which tracks calories burned using heart rate monitoring. You can choose exactly what workout you're doing (weight lifting, running, HIIT) and it will be recorded on your phone for further analysis.

The fact is that they're a good utility and give me more to my wrist than just time/date. I will say that in parallel to wearing the Apple Watch almost 24/7, I love my regular watches and will continue to collect them.

Here's the key question you need to answer: are you focusing on the signals the watch sends to you (time, steps, HR, etc.) or on the signals it sends to your team?

There's plenty of content on WSO about the social signals you can send with your choice of watch. For most products, Apple is a luxury brand that signals price insensitive early-adoptor status. They tried to reach for high-end watch luxury watch with their gold case a few years ago, but it didn't' work.

(btw, one of the great techno-porn videos of all time.)

In Finance, wearing an Apple watch signals that you care more about functionality and fitness than playing the game of conforming to social expectations. Your call.

Until you’re rolling in dough, consider Raymond Weil

I've now realized that this may be inappropriate for many of you, but relevant for others. Let me explain:

Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar.

I got this watch as a gift when I started my first global business unit GM job at a tech company, so I did't know what it cost. In large group internal or customer meetings with people 12 feet away, they saw that I was wearing a watch. In smaller meetings/conversations with people 4 feet away, they saw that I was wearing a thin gold watch with a crocodile band. Only one person got within 1 foot away, close enough to read the label: me. With those audiences, it worked fine.

Sometimes a cigar is something entirely different.

Some teams care deeply whether the watch is a Raymond Weil costing $10^2 vs a Patel Philippe costing $10^4+. Know your audience and plan accordingly.
