FP&A / COO Finance Strat / Treasury Finance?

Hello WSO,

I am currently on a rotation programme within a BB with two one-year placements in various internal finance positions. I am coming to the end of my first one (product control, thank goodness it's over) and wondered what people thought would be the best choice for the next rotation. The three that I would be most interested in are FP&A, Treasury Finance and COO Finance Strategy (I believe this is essentially the team who deal with the longer tem strategy of the Finance function - although not certain). I wondered what people's thoughts were on exit opps for these three? In terms of career paths, I am yet to decide between pursuing a career in the corporate finance function or trying to make the switch to IB. Which would be best for either of these routes do you think?

Thanks for your help.

Just a heads-up, if you're trying to make the switch to IB an MBA is likely going to be the way to go. I haven't heard of anyone making the jump from corporate finance to IB, even internally, without an MBA (though I have limited data points)

These functions are very different from one another, so it depends on what you want to do. Also, it depends on what the actual job description is. For example, COO Finance Strategy could encompass actually working at a high level and help establish a long-term plan for the organization, or it could simply be Strategy finance where you are a back-office accounting function. I'm not sure about jumping to IBD from any of these positions, however if you want to work in Corporate Finance FP&A is the bread and butter. However, if the COO Finance Strategy opportunity involves actual BD/Strategic Planning responsibilities, then I believe it could be a very interesting position.

Interesting, why no love for FP&A? Wouldn't that and Treasury be the best for switching to IB?

Well none of corporate finance is really "good" for switching into IB. FP&A in particular is quite far removed from M&A or anything external to the company. Out of your options the most interesting one sounds like Finance Strategy but it's hard to say because strategy can mean so many different things.
