Full time Strategy, Part time VC

Hello fellow monkeys,

I currently work as a Corporate Strategy Analyst at a F500, but I have had an interest in the VC industry for a while now. I really wanted to get hands on experience working at a VC, but given that I have only been in my current role for less than 3 months, I feel like it is too soon to jump ship.

Have you heard of people taking on a part time internship while working 60-70 hours a week? How would you all suggest I go about getting a part-time internship at a VC firm – working there weekends and/or nights? Also, any advice on what skills I should have to make it worth it for them to bring me on (even unpaid) in a part-time role?

If you want to best position yourself for a potential future role in VC your best option at this point is not an internship but instead an entrepreneurial endeavor or involvement with a local start-up. Get involved in your local start-up community and meet as many different people as you can. Offer your services or skills to a local start-up or figure out something that you are passionate about and run with it during the late night hours after work.

The short answer is that with your background and brief work experience you would not be a valuable asset to a VC firm at this point (even if you offered to work for free). Start reading VC blogs and following industry trends.
