LHDanWell, do you want to do consulting or finance...?
its a summer internship - i guess that he wants something that would be a better brand on his cv, and would provide him with best possible opportunities for the FT recruiting, business school/master or w/e...
and btw finance =/= ibd
and consulting internship at MBB is a great first step for any finance role

I don't see the point of your post as it does not change my inquiry. They are both phenomenal brands and experiences to have on a resume for FT recruiting. They both will get you into great graduate programs as well. The difference between the two is the industry which is why I asked which one was more interesting to the OP.
And IBD is not finance? I am not saying it is the sole financial role there is in the world. Nor did I say one can't go from MBB to a financial role (although VCs and PE prefer IBD over MBB). If the OP wants to do finance, it makes since to do IBD. Why do Strategy Consulting if you want to do finance?

Go with GS. You can always go Bain for FT if you don't like it. Consulting recruiting for FT is easier than banking recruiting for FT.
Half the consultants, especially at a place like Bain, want to do PE anyway. Go with GS.
