Most important thing to do is to first discuss mobility with your supervisor before applying. If your boss is supportive, then you can go through the process. If not, then you're jeopardizing your chances at a return offer and you should just let it go.
It is very difficult to move internally from back office to front office, and I would advise you build a network of contacts in the division where you're looking to end up, and then craft a compelling story about why you want to make the switch. When you have people vouch for you to HR, your candidacy will be taken a lot more seriously.
My son went through the mobility process last year as an intern in Finance (controllers) and is now a new full time analyst in Investment Management (GSAM). If you truly are interested in another division, you should try for it. Supposedly, it should not hurt your chances on getting a full time offer from where you are interning. I bet they even check to find out you are getting an offer from the internship before you are granted the interviews in the other division in which you are trying for.
was he in salt lake city? i was debating trying to do this for another location
