H1B & green card
Hi,
I was wondering if anyone has been in my shoes and can offer a piece of advice:
I'm graduating in June and starting full-time at the end of the month. The company I'm going to work for told me they plan to apply for H!B Visa for me. However, this is not desirable for me, ideally, I would like to get a green card. What's the process for getting it? Should I do it on my own, or the company participates as well? Is having an H1B Visa an obstacle in the process, or I can have H1B and be applying for a green card at the same time? Can/should I reveal to the company that I'd like a green card, and if so, at what point?
All information greatly appreciated
you cant just get apply and get a greencard. sorry bud maybe try your luck in the diversity lottery, but your chance is less than 2%
Yeah you can't, I think.
But do you have any close American ancestors in your family? I'm going that route, all you need's a lawyer.
Usually the firm will apply on your behave after you work for them for at least one year. Applying green card is a very tedious process and it is very expensive. You will not want do it alone without your firm's sponsor.
Guys, thanks a lot for your advice. No, I don't have American ancestors. And yes, I knew I can't simply apply for it. How expensive is it? If the job goes well, I'd be willing to pay any 5-digit sum out of my own pocket. If it doesn't, I won't need the green card anyway.
What I'm really curious about is, whether the firm's participation matters in getting the green card(as in, an employer needs to do sth in the process so that it's successful) beyond sponsoring? Also, how and when should I talk to the firm about this? Once I start working, or after getting some job well done? Thank again
Marry an American
Otherwise, H1B is incredibly tedious to convert into a GC, since the employer has to sponsor you and usually the you'd have to work in the US for roughly 6 years.
the length of waiting really depends on your home country aka the wait list. China and India are the worst. The back log is so long that the wait period is about 5-6 years. Another way to get a GC is by starting your own firm and firing a bunch of Americans. It only takes 1 year or 2 to get a GC.
I'm from a tiny country, so the wait list shouldn't be too bad. How do I get on that list?
