Help! How to Reject a Superday Invite
Hello WSO,
Any advice would be kindly appreciated.
I was called this morning by Goldman Sachs and invited to an IB Superday. Since I've committed to JPM for the summer, I naturally turned down the superday. I don't have any particular regrets regarding the choice, since it was a matter of circumstance.
However, I've been offered conflicting advice on how to follow up on the situation. Some hesitancies:
Follow up with GS: I understand I should email a thank you. However, since I only had a brief phone call, I don't have contact information. Do I email my past HR contact? Moreover, I've been advised to attach a copy of my offer letter, which I find excessive. Is this advisable?
Informing JPM: Should I let them know I was offered a superday at GS and turned it down? I've been told it will emphasize that I'm "valuable on the job market and loyal." Can't hurt keep them in the loop, but not sure if information like this is too brazen coming from an intern. Furthermore, if I do let them know, who should let know? (Both MDs who interviewed me, my favorite MD that interviewed me, my favorite analyst, and/or HR)
Thanks in advance guys.
It's just a superday invite, not a formal offer, so nobody really cares... You don't have to do anything unless you want to keep some contacts from the GS side, then you send a short and polite thank you letter to your previous round interviewers As for JP, it won't make any difference if you say it or not, if I were you I won't mention it after the offer is set
perfect thanks
Most likely they won't care but I rejected a superday once by informing the firm I had already an offer elsewhere I was going to take it therefore not attending the superday would give someone else a chance to do so.
I would either do nothing or quickly email any close Goldman contacts thanking them for their help in the process. You’ve already spoken to HR to decline, there isn’t really a need for formal emails and proof of your offer.
As for JP the answer is definitely do nothing... leveraging superdays to show you’re wanted is fine in interviews, but would come off as strange if they already hired you
If you reach out to people at JPM just to tell them that you turned down a Superday at another firm, they will begin hating you very quickly.
That's like telling your girlfriend, "I turned down a hot girl who wanted to hook up with me." It's nothing to be proud of. Stop looking for attention and just get ready for your time at JPM next summer.
