Will my major be a disadvantage for investment banking recruiting?
I am studying at Cornell University and getting a BS in Healthcare Policy. It combines policy/math/econ classes with some bio/Chem and healthcare specific classes like population health, healthcare economics, pharmaceutical management etc. Would this be a good major for investment banking? I am genuinely interested in it and have an interest in the business of healthcare/medicine along with finance. I may also get a minor in business. Additionally, would it seem as though my interests are too niche and focused on healthcare IB and would this be a disadvantage?
You can spin anything if you try hard enough. A major in healthcare policy isn't a disadvantage at all, and if anything makes you stand out as unique in a room full of finance and business majors. That being said, you have to pick up the slack, and learn technicals on your own to prove that you really are interested, and this isn't just something you are 'trying out.' I have a CS degree and most of my interviews were spent defending my interest in IB. As long as you nail that, you're good
yes everything he said above is super accurate. you have to have a story of why u are majoring in Healthcare policy, if you are interested in IB. it won’t put you at a disadvantage if you have a legitimate story. I know a friend who majored in civil engineering and is incoming IB. craft a good story of why you are doing the major you are, why you are interested in IB, and why you think that this major may help you or give you a different outlook on things
You would fit in perfect with the HC group. Might want to look into that given your major and interests.
I’ve been seeing so many posts about majors, but it really doesn’t matter. As long as you network, have a story to tell, know why you want to pursue IB, and master the technicals, you’ll be fine. But just know that you’ll have more explaining to do as a non-business/econ major during behavioral. That’s all.
