How did you guys make it?

Freshman here: I currently go to semi-target and am majoring in government/minoring in finance. I've spoken to quite a few people that are well connected to the industry - two of which have offered to help me find some finance internships this summer but its obviously not a sure thing. I've applied to some programs like SEO (accepted in this one) and am waiting to see if I got into the next round of a program Morgan Stanley has (probably won't get in tbh). I've also prepped as much as possible with regards to the technicals but I admit I have to step it up in this aspect. I see so many other people on here or at my school who have done so much already that I sometimes feel I am not doing enough. To those who have made into IB/have secured an IB internship what advice would you give me to better my chances of getting that internship especially with such fierce competition?

Funniest

Things I would personally do to establish dominance as the school's top IB hardo cuck.

  1. Don't be a puss and don't stop network. I don't care if you had an awkward convo with an analyst and now you're depressed. That talk is for ass eaters and back office betas. At your age try to get like 100 emails/LIn cold messages a week.

  2. Only pick professors that give an A, you need that 3.7+ and you're not going to get that with boomer professors.

  3. If you have a mouse throw it out, this isn't consulting.

  4. Try to find an Investment Banking internship for this year. You're late and a freshman but there's definitely banks who just need extra hands rather than a FT analysts. You can look at axial or google map to see IB in your city. You don't have to have a mastery in technical's for this. Only reason you won't get one is because you didn't reach out enough, no excuses.

  5. Find upper classman mentors, people who have succeeded at your school at obtaining internships. They're good resources and might funnel internships down to you.

  6. Enjoy yourself, if you really want to pursue IB you're not gonna have much free time after college. Get a dedicated SO and do what you enjoy.

Also is there a reason you aren't majoring in finance?

First of all, thanks your response. The reason for not majoring in finance is 1.) was not actually looking to initially break into IB and 2.) its very hard to transfer internally at my school - especially since I didn't take the required courses to transfer so I would actually end up graduating later which I genuinely do not want to do. Do you think this would hurt my chances? For context, I'm looking placement in Houston IB. Lastly, got that final round interview for that MS Freshmen program, what would you recommend in terms of preparation/presentation?

Most Helpful

A great piece of advice that I heard after my freshman year, is that because it is too early for you to start networking for Junior SA (maybe not too early from soph, but still), network with seniors from your school, or even other schools, who are incoming IB analysts. The reason is two fold, first, these guys/girls are likely gonna respond because they are seniors and have way more time on their hands. They recently went through the process and are probably overflowing with advice and tips to share. Second, if you form a solid connection with them now, in like a year or so when you start recruiting for junior SA, they will be either late first year analyst or 2nd years and thus will likely be involved in the recruiting process and much more willing to help you out because they know you. Also you get almost like a warm up for future networking etc
