How do I raise money for a hedge fund?

Let's say I wanted to start a hedge fund in 5 years. What would I need to do now to make sure I know the right people to be able to successfully raise money for this? How am I supposed to meet these people?

To me this sounds impossibly difficult, and I actually don't understand how I would ever meet these people.

I talked to a director of investments at an endowment and he said that he needs a track record. I heard some people start with friends/family money and I know some funds start by offering a discount on management/carry fees if you invest for obvious reasons.
