How Do You Handle Midday Sleepiness?
Just about whenever I have a night with limited sleep, I run out of energy for about 30-60 minutes in the middle of the day where it becomes difficult to resist sleep unless I am working on something high pressure. For people in finance pulling low/no sleep nights consistently, how do you fight through midday crashes?
Caffeine and plenty of water.
This is the answer.
Plenty of water cannot be stressed enough.
Get up and walk around. It gets the blood flowing and helps break the addiction to the computer. I like to take a walk outside around the block every now and then. I'm in a coastal tier 3 city (think smaller than Charlotte) and the weather usually cooperates. If your boss (think warden) wouldn't approve of that idea, get a cup of ice water.
If all else fails, log onto WSO and give shitty advice to random people on the internet.
if your boss doesnt approve of the idea of you taking a 5 minute break, get the fuck out of there.
Totally agree with you.
Tangent: As highly as I value "fit" in choosing a place of work, that luxury is really only afforded to you as you climb the ladder. Coming out of college, especially if you're a non-target or have a non-traditional background, fit is great and all but getting a paycheck is usually the top priority. After getting some experience and learning what it is about your current situation that you don't like, then you can make "fit" at your next position a priority.
Caffeine pills.
200 MG when I wake up. 200 MG before lunch. 200 MG around 4PM
Layer with L-theanine if doing boring tasks.
I found out that drinking concentrated tea right after lunch keeps me in good shape for the 2-3 hours of the digestion process. This is rather crucial because I trade during European hours and US markets open at 15:30 here. I get another round of concentrated tea after 16:00, which keeps me up for another 2-3 hours untill I call it a day.
I'm a rather nervous person myself so coffee doesn't do it. I don't want to start smashing keys.
wicked hours. when do you go into the office? if you go in past noon, prob a great way to beat traffic/rush hour going and and leaving work
8 am or 8:30, leave around 19 unless there's something like the fed meeting or similar. I often eat at the desk , however if markets are dead I get 1 hour break during the morning for the gym.
Can you elaborate a bit on concentrated tea? What kind of tea?
No particular brand, if anything I pick flavours I think I might like (I often use Green), since you can get tired of the same taste over and over. What I make sure is that it's not machine made. Grab your boiler, a large cup (I mean it) and keep the bag in it for 10 minutes at least. It must be strong. I generally do it as soon as I finish eating, it generally kills the drowsiness after lunch, which was a deadly enemy for my productivity.
Live a healthy lifestyle and stop eating a bunch of carbs all day to avoid having to come up with bandaids. You should not be sleepy in the middle of the day like a baby. Your work is probably totally unstimulating too and I'd work toward changing that as that is mental death.
Don’t have your first cup of coffee in the morning right after waking up. Your body is totally rested and doesn’t need a caffeine kick yet to focus.
Drink some walker after waking, you’ll feel energized for the first few hours, and then drink your coffee around 10am. This’ll keep you going until lunch- eat something healthy/ salad, no cheese or fatty dressing. Opting for the chicken tends or pizza will knock you tf out. Then around 2 or 3pm get a coffee or green tea and you should be able to power through work through the evening.
Overall diet and exercise/ healthy lifestyle factors are most important for maintaining high energy levels. Relying on caffeine alone works in the short term, but this is a marathon not a sprint.
You and GoldenCinderblock are spot on with the carbs. I was talking with some coworkers and we found high carb (pizza / burrito bowls / rice + meat dishes, pasta, etc) made us super sleepy after lunch. Opted for a salad (I include cheese and oil based dressing contrary to your post (dude lettuce and chicken salad is like 300 calories you can't survive on that)) and the caloric difference between the higher carb meals we used to eat and the salad is made up for with a mid afternoon light snack.
I don't believe the whole "eat 5 meals a day to lose weight" bullshit for weight-loss but I definitely think spacing out caloric intake, especially carbs, helps avoid the "I just want to nap and fall into a coma" feeling post lunch.
who wakes up totally rested .
and no coffee ? what is this, dreamland lol

chow
Rub one out in the restroom
what's your diet like? don't eat a heavy lunch as that will put you to sleep. try spinach salad, protein, etc.
If your building has a treadmill, run a mile real quick before you shower in the mornings. It will help to wake you up for the day. Especially if you're time constrained, 5-15min of intense exercise will help you for the day. It doesn't seem like much, but try to get your heart rate as high as possible.
Take pre before and definitely coffee after - and you should feel great.
This can all be fixed with stop eating quick digesting carbs which cause your body to produce an insulin spike and make you sleep.
