How easy do diversity target kids have it, really?
I’ve heard diversity applicants have easier interviews and an easier time getting interviews and that target school kids get interviews more easily.
Is all of that true? How easy is the recruiting process if you’re diverse and go to a target?
This question is asked basically every day and you already know the answer. Just scroll down and find one of the posts where people obsess over this and AA....

Great work.
Diversity students: Really easy, sometimes they don't even get asked technicals
Target Students: Easier bc there are guaranteed spots, but you still have to be competitive bc there aren't enough spots for everyone even if you go to Wharton
I’m double diversity (URM, veteran) at a target. I got rejected from every bank I applied to except for one. These kids have no idea what they’re talking about when they say banks will hire you for being brown. They don’t give a shit, dude, they are NOT charity organizations. They want the best people who will make them the most money. Just because you failed to make it in this industry doesn’t mean you need to create a scapegoat in that little imagination of yours.
I know of other URMs from my target who struck out of recruiting entirely. Good GPAs but kind of generic with weak extracurriculars.
This is really interesting to hear, because people have said that some diversity kids don’t even have to do technicals. Out of curiosity, what level of target are you at?
Not sure why you're being downvoted lmao. The ones with this sentiment are the only ones that would disagree...
I think that with the exception of veteran only programs (from what I've heard, they are limited) being a vet would actually count against you, as you are probably at least 4? years older than all other candidates.
I’m not sure they cared much about that but I was a pretty weak candidate. Average GPA (3.6) and pretty basic, non-finance extracurriculars with no leadership positions in any of them. I’m not surprised I struck out of BB recruiting. I managed to connect with a guy who was in my unit before that worked at a mid-level MM and got in there.
Just goes to show that simply being diversity isn’t good enough and they sure as shit care about your actual credentials. I wish BBs were hiring “unqualified” minorities because I’d be there right now lol.
national guard veterans probably have it the easiest, if they’re officer route they can join a bank only a year later than their peers, and still qualify for all the diversity and military placement programs.
When I ran recruiting for my school, they explicitly told me not to ask technicals, only behavioral, so take that for what it’s worth.
Speaking from experience in, it's not AS easy as everyone thinks. GS/MS diversity events usually have acceptance rates of 2-3% and usually earn you an auto ding at recruiting season if you don't get in, but it does give an in to a lot of non-target candidates that wouldn't normally be considered.
do you have to network for these or just online ap?
It's easier but still not THAT easy. Honestly from my experience EBs don't really lower their standards (though they're starting to) but some BBs are notorious for asking much easier questions (looking at you GS)
Shut The Fuck Up
I never seem to understand these types of questions.
If you're good enough to get in, you will. It could be quick, or it could take a while.
But looking at others as the reason why you might've struck out? Probably reaffirms the outcome.
OP here. I’m a diverse target student who hasn’t yet gone through recruiting; I was just curious if the things I read on WSO were true.
I'm sure some of what you've read is exaggerated. But its true that being at a target gives you a leg up and being diverse gives you another leg up. Having both, you should be able to land in IB pretty easily if you keep up your grades and check the boxes in recruiting.
Diversity hire here. I’m gonna be completely honest with you, the process is significantly easier— almost laughably so. They literally walk in, ask you how your day was, and then they have you sign the offer before you leave! Yep, right there on the spot I kid you not. I didn’t even apply! I was just walking down the street and the MD of JPM/MS/GS literally FLUNG himself out the window to get to me!! Just to sweeten the deal he even offered me a 1 year promotion track to MD myself!! Now I’m six months in and poised to make partner by age 24! Wow if it wasn’t for that good ol’ diversity recruiting...
Now go fuck yourself lmao

Rich white/East Asian women really benefit the most from diversity recruiting but were not ready to have that conversation yet...
When I think of "diversity recruiting" my first thought is the loads of unqualified female candidates my bank hired. Asian and White Males lose the most from these diversity initiatives, and you're right in that these "rich white/East Asian women" are the ones doing the most damage
I would say it really depends. But, I went through a diversity recruitment program with GS analyst program and was definitely funneled through the first few rounds with ease. Made it through to the Superday when I most likely wouldn’t have otherwise but once I got there, the process wasn’t any easier. Was asked a wide range of very technical and behavioral questions.
IMO you just get more opportunities because of diversity. 99% of processes are the same. So if you’re bad you still don’t land.
