How long should I wait to follow up with my old boss?

I sent my old boss (a PM) an e-mail earlier this week regarding internships for this summer, and he hasn't responded yet. This is surprising, as he has always responded to my e-mails within one day...except for this time. Any thoughts on how (and when) I should follow up? I want to move into a new industry, and his connections/thoughts would be immensely helpful to me; plus, the sooner he e-mails me back would be better, as this is prime time for summer internship hiring. However, I don't want to seem pushy or annoying. Any and all thoughts about the appropriate timeline / thing to say to him in this situation would be much appreciated!

Give him a call in a week or so. It could be a few reasons: 1) He ignored you 2) He missed your email because he was busy with 100 other things 3) He marked your email and will respond as soon as he has some free time (some professionals reply to my emails after 3-6 weeks).

Don't forget, they are very busy (especially if they are VPs/MDs)
