How much self-study do u do after work?
Hey guys, just wondering how much non-mandatory self-study and finance-related readings do u do everyday after work? I’m currently just starting out at a small fund manager and I understand there’s a really steep learning curve. So Iwould really appreciate if u can share ur experiences here.
Depending on what your current background is and what your finance knowledge level is will determine how much reading/ studying hours is required. Assuming you are a junior associate/ freshman. You can devote at-least one hour of study on a daily basis.
At the coffee shop, doing python right now and reading up on volatility trading. As much as I don’t want to be here doing this on a Sunday at 4pm, I wrote a separate post elsewhere saying no one owes you anything in life.
Link?
That used to be my mantra. Lost it along the way.
I usually do 3-5 hours of self study a day including while I am at work. But my job is ridiculously easy for the pay I make.
Still in Sweet Home Alabama bro?
That was uncalled for.
Studied for CFA for the first 3 years after college, then felt getting steep enough at the office:) really admire those colleagues of mine who can prepare to their GMAT after 12-14 working hours
Am currently retaking the GMAT to prepare for my exchange semester (2nd-tier Ivy, here I come) and I find it as fun as the first time. Sure, it sucks to get an exercise wrong or overstep the time limit, but it does make me feel really smart, which I like :^)
I think there’s a ton to learn out there and one should do everything they can to set aside a couple hours a week to get better at their craft. Banking, in particular, is weird - your work can be fairly mechanical, meaning you could learn very little if you don’t go above and beyond by studying your work and thinking about what it is you’re actually doing. I dedicate at least a couple hours a week to modeling and an hour or so a week to reading the decks I put together. Makes a huge difference.
