Fuck this guy is the correct attitude. If you're in a call and feel like it's not going to be beneficial or if the guy is straight up being a dick then just try to wrap it up as quick as you can, thank him for the time, and then just forget about it. There are lot's of assholes in this industry. You can't take anything personal. Maybe this guy's dad didn't give him enough attention as a kid so now he has to belittle people to make himself feel more confident. So fuck that guy and continue to maintain the good connections you made with the other bankers.

I don't know the tone and what the other things he specifically said in the call but I think it's a great virtue to remain humble and be open to learn. If he offered to call again in three months, assuming it wasn't just to blow you off, then I would keep the connection going as he is still a point of contact. Maybe he likes to see tenacity and humbleness in a candidate, not be discouraged by a rough exchange. Perhaps it would impress him if you took the interim to gain more work experiences, become more knowledgeable about the area, and then demonstrate growth and persistence by reaching out to him again three months later. But since you are at a target with lots of alumni, one less connection won't make or break your recruiting. I would just maintain the other connections you have with more amicable bankers.

Fuck this guy. There’s literally no reason to make yourself go through that. Next time be prepared to end the call right when it’s clear he’s being an ass, if he can’t treat people with a minimum of respect and dignity, you’re not required to waste any more of your time.

You will come across people like this no matter what industry. When you’re young it is hard to not take these things personally. But as you get older, you begin to understand that some people are rude for a myriad of reasons:

  1. Some people are just jerks, just like some people are just awesome and helpful.
  1. Just because people have a great job, doesn’t mean their life is awesome. You can be an MD at Warburg Pincus but what if you’re fat or ugly or divorced or your kids hate you or have a small dick or have no real friends, etc. you’re life can suck no matter how much cash you have, so you’re miserable all the time.
  1. There are many people who feel better when insulting others and it’s easy to attack a young kid who doesn’t know much and is trying to break into an industry. Just move on, the fact you made a post means the interaction bothered you. You’ll never meet this guy so just let it go.

When I was interviewing at your age, I was completely shy and had a hard time staring at people in the eyes especially for interviews. The interviewer, head of IB industry unit said to me, "when I speak you look into my eyes." There will be a lot of assholes in this industry but you got to push through if you want to be successful. Think of it as an RPG game as you go through each of these assholes in case "bosses". Other times, you can just interview elsewhere and find somewhere the culture fits. Good luck my man.

Which school has such a culture? I'd find it extremely demoralising and would rather not go to such a place to study. I'd really appreciate some guesses from others if OP doesn't want to share it.

A majority of schools have them, especially the prestigious ones. Don’t let the fortunate kids who are not humble and are assholes get to you. You should understand, as I have, that if you are not in a position of privilege, you just have to work harder. Don’t be a hater, and ignore the toxic noise. Remember, you’re on your own mission writing your own story

Couldn't agree more. It's easier said than done but I'm trying to ignore the toxic attitude that comes from my less privileged peers too. There's really no point in that. Thanks for the quick answer btw

Would think that he wants a bit of attitude and fiery passion out of you (act and sound arrogant who knows what they want), otherwise you're just another passive push over IMO. Are you going to be just another nice guy or take the reins in your life?
