How to invest 300+ hours this summer
Hello gentlemen ,
I'm a freshman (not in the US) and I was looking for some advices on what should I do this summer to help my professional career . I'm in the process of cold calling dozens of companies to get an internship, but so far I didn't get anything. The internships system in my country is quite different and It's really hard to get an internship as a first-year.
So, in case I don't get an Internship( I do have an opportunity to do physics research at my Uni), what should I learn during the summer? I have about 300 hours of learning to use (about 4 hours a day) and I'm looking to learn something useful for a job in investment banking,or just the 'business world' in general. Ideally it would also be tangible, so I can show it on a CV. I thought of taking the level 1 CFA exam, but realized that I don't have the requirements to be a candidate. I could also learn a language, but I'm already fluent in a few languages so It won't be that useful. I could learn to program, but we do some programming in my major.
Do you guys have any suggestions? I know I should chill during freshman year, but 4 hours a day is really not that much and I'm too stressed to be able to do nothing during 3 months.
Thank you!
I'm in a similar boat to you. I'm just taking extra courses to get ahead in my next year. As well, I'm doing BIWS and reading books. Lastly, I'm growing my linkedIn and working on a stock pitch.
Revenue is generated through sales, but sales skills are seldom taught at universities. I can't offer too many words of wisdom here as I am a masters student but if you don't land an internship you might want to consider a temporary sales position. I cold-call at a financial advisory firm during my afternoons - it's gruelling work but it builds resilient character and makes for good conversation during interviews.
