I didn’t offer to pay for the banker’s coffee in coffee chat

I honestly forgot to offer , not that I am cheap
initially when he first arrived, i asked him if he would like a coffee/drink, he said maybe later.
then we started chatting, our conversations were flowing really well
around 20 mins later
he stood up and said he is going to get a coffee
I forgot to offer to pay for his coffee....
but when he came back we continued chatting, and conversation still great
but did I make a big mistake for not paying for his coffee? is this a deal breaker ? I honestly forgot

Funniest

To be honest it really annoys me when kids insist on paying for my coffee.

ya true, but I still feel bad for not offering on my side. cause it seems a bit rude? not sure

No banker wants a college kid to pay for their coffee. They're making $130k+ at the analyst level all-in and they know college kids are usually quite broke so they aren't going to ding you for not trying to pay for their coffee. I did quite a few coffee chats back when I recruited and never once paid for a coffee and probably didn't offer like 25% of the time and no one cared.

he’s a first year analyst. and yes, I am a masters student .... I feel bad for not offering to pay though. I hope I didn’t leave a bad impression

I invited an IB analyst for coffee chat and she even paid my coffee. She stopped my paying transaction and said "you are a student, let me pay it" I am appreciating and remember her nice till now
Hope I have the chances to give this nice to other students in the future.

I would get in line to order with the person I was with and I would either get my own coffee, pay for it myself, and then ask to pay for the persons coffee, or once we I got my card out to pay for my drink they would say " let me get it" and they would pay, or while in line they would order first and ask me what I wanted.

My Brother. My Captain. My King.

you don't pay for their coffee lol. They usually ask what would you like and offer to pay with whatever they're buying. If they don't say that, then you didn't make the right connection. It sounds like your chat went great so you don't have to worry about them "dinging" you for not offering to purchase their coffee.

As others have said don’t worry about it. Any reasonable person won’t care. I’ve had students offer to pay but I don’t ever remember if they don’t, and I always end up paying for their coffee if we end up ordering together. While it’s nice to offer, I know what it’s like to be a student and I would never want a student with 0 income (and potentially student loans) to also pay for my coffee.

it's not about you measuring your wealth with the banker lmao. Seniority pays for the drink always unless you really are a stuck up trust fund baby. Just think of the banker treating you and that's all you have to think about it. Just make sure the conversation is worthwhile as 30 minutes of their time is more important that sipping a 5 minute drink.

ya of course . I said thank you for your time face to face. I also sent him a thank you email when I got home

Of course. I always tried to "fall in love" with the person, like, really, genuinely be interested in them as person. Works better than the 100th question about "workplace culture", etc, and they open up faster that way.

In the recruiting days, met with a banker at my current firm for a coffee chat. I realized I forgot to bring my wallet just as I was going up to pay at the counter with him right behind me and thought it was Armageddon. Luckily he stepped in and offered to pay before I was about to say I forgot my wallet. Don't sweat it man, generally the banker pays for the coffee for the prospect.
