IB Boutique Internship
Got an internship at a boutique, but it seems that I won't have much modeling experience when I start.
Is it typical to not learn modeling experience during a boutique internship?
How do I go about spinning the internship to make it seem like I learned things applicable to a FT job at a BB or the like?
Is the fact that it will say "investment bank" on my resume a huge help, with nothing else?
i am looking for bouqtie internship as well, may i ask how did you go about finding one is your boutique taking on more intern :)
I worked at a boutique this past summer. I had to prove my worth on more basic tasks and eventually convinced the staffer that I could work on some basic modeling. Boutiques usually don't have robust training programs, so you either have to have prior knowledge or learn on the job. As long as you work hard, don't make mistakes, and triple check your work, you should be able to get modeling experience after your staffer trusts you.
I’ll give my insight. I spent my freshman summer at a small boutique investment bank where I had very little technical skills. Because of that, I spent most of my time building buyers lists. For my l sophomore summer, I realized my best opportunity would be to again return to the same boutique. To prepare, I spent the 6 months leading up to it practicing modeling and valuation thoroughly. My sophomore summer, I not only build full valuation models, I even delivered the valuation section on some pitches. This experience was vital to helping me get my BB offer my junior year and then convert into FT during my Junior summer. For boutique internships, it honestly comes down to what you can actually do. Unlike a more regimented bank, most boutiques typically have no problem having an intern do as much as they can actually handle. I would try to be as prepared as possible for the summer so that you can do what you want.
