[IBD] Summer Analyst Tips

I think this topic is something many people are interested in and I've looked into past posts, but most are either outdated or spread out. The purpose of this post is to highlight the IBD Summer Analyst journey and how to succeed and secure the return offer.

I'm an incoming SA for a BB in NYC next summer and am curious to hear about the summer analyst process. From what I've heard, the first week will generally be an introduction to the firm and you'll eventually get paired with a mentor within your group. From there you will work within the group.

I'm interested in hearing about must have hard skills for summer analysts, I'm thinking the following are good:

1) Be an excel god (are there any sample models I could just practice building and rebuilding?)
2) Understand the significance of formatting and aligning things on powerpoint

Moving on, what has the Summer Analyst journey and process been for you guys (maybe this summer was weird haha)? What type of perks/swag did you guys get?

Also just curious, if we're in office next summer, do interns get their own desktop or are they given a laptop? Do interns get corporate emails? Corporate phones?

Thanks in advance for any help!

I'll opine since I'm a current SA. In terms of hard skills, knowing excel shortcuts coming in is super helpful. The WSP courses would be good practice for that.

At my BB, the first week consisted of listening to senior speakers and doing pretty basic financial training classes. We hit the desk on the second week and were paired with buddies who have been good resources throughout the summer. In terms of swag, it varies from bank to bank but for mine we got the banker/duffel bag, a mug, notebook, and some company branded USB converters.

Yes to the corporate email, no to the phone (at least in the virtual world)

Hey I’ll help you out a little, my non covid intern experience in 2019 was at a reputable MM doing M&A. At that firm, I got an iPhone 7 and a laptop for the summer (supposed to take the laptop home every night but rarely used it). I didn’t need any of my own technology whatsoever. I got free stuff like yeti cups, a banker bag, stuff like that. Training is chill but everyone is networking a lot, which is good. I got paired with a mentor and we chatted periodically.

In terms of hard skills, yeah excel is important and ppt is important. Honestly the best thing you can do before your internship is become a (more) interesting person, authentically, as that will help you connect with people and build long-lasting friendships with professional benefits. You already got an offer so I’m sure you’d be fine on technicals, especially with the training they’ll give you

No idea why this is getting downvoted, this is true. In coverage you will be in PPT more than excel and a summer analyst isn’t touching a model in any meaningful capacity. The extent of your excel work would maybe be ad-hoc Analysis like “what was SG&A as a % of revenue for years XYZ.”

I spent most of my summer (BB coverage group) on PPT not excel so in my experience too PPT is the real focus. You can get away without any further training than uni in PPT for sure, but when you're formatting slides at midnight I found having done a course helped my confidence and made it quicker. I just did Udemy 'Beginner to Pro in PPT: Complete PPT training' which cost like a tenner
