In good shape for SA?
Hey so I go to a non-pa is 3.97 and cGPA is 3.6. I have considerable finance experience from various roles at the university (VP finance, investment club) and from a part-time job as well. Do you think I'd have a shot at 2018 IBD?
Thanks in advance and feel free to be brutally honest (if need be haha)
I have no experience in this matter so I can't answer your question directly. That being said, you gave responders two options, yes or no. If someone tells you, "No, you don't have a chance.", is that going to stop you from at least trying? Probably not. Now someone might give you some advice, but either way, it's worth a shot to try.
Ahh i realize what I did there now, but strictly speaking from a GPA point of view, is that good enough?
If it's out of 4, what do you think
i have no idea which is why i'm posting here lol.. what do you think?
How non-target are we talking? Canadian banks are less receptive to "non-traditional" backgrounds compared to their American counterparts simply for the fact that there are less spots available for investment banking in Canada. It's not impossible, but its definitely an uphill battle as there are a lot of qualified candidates at the Canadian target schools that don't get a placement in banking.
Regardless, if anyone tells you that your background isn't up to par.. are you going to stop trying? Academic/professional pedigree isn't everything when it comes to recruiting, and a lot of it comes down to luck. Do whatever is in your power to maximize your odds, and let fate carry out the rest.
Honestly its all about your uni. Are you in Ryerson/York type University? If so there are still alumni in banking from there (PM me if you are from York), that you might want to reach out and contact. If you are from lower level unis you might need to look at more local banks and/or different positions within the IBD division.
Agree with the two posters above me, in Canada its more about the school you are from, and Canadians are less receptive to people from non-business backgrounds. Tbh I'm not sure how your cumulative GPA will fare, from what I've seen most banks cut off at 3.7 / 4, but again there are always exceptions. Just network hard and be more competitive, you do have a shot
