Info on Valor Equity Partners?
Has anyone heard anything about Valor Equity Partners? I saw they were investors in Musk startups (Tesla/SpaceX) but was wondering how they are regarded in the growth equity space and whether junior work is sourcing heavy like other growth funds. Comp, culture, hours info would be helpful as well, Thanks!
No idea about what they're like internally, but they're regarded as one of the top growth equity shops without question. Their longevity, list of portcos and fund raises should make that pretty obvious. Antonio is one of those guys who never has to think about raising capital because there's more than he could ever hope to manage at once banging on his door every time they announce a new fund.
How would you compare it to Insight, Summit, TCV, GA, etc. for a pre-MBA role?
Sorry if these questions are a little dumb, just not very familiar with the space
I mean they're all top tier shops, can't really comment more than that since I don't know much about them internally. What I've heard second hand is that their junior roles are heavily focused on execution as opposed to sourcing which is less typical in growth equity from what I've personally seen. Anyone who knows more feel free to correct me on that.
Bump to follow
They've been raising multiple new funds. They just got CalPERS money last year. https://aum13f.com/firm/valor-management-corp
They got an eclectic mix of portcos.
Good growth shop, but more under the radar than the traditional JMIs, Summit, TA, etc.
In my opinion they're a little more growth/venture-y as opposed to a Summit or TA where they're more growth/PE if that makes sense.
For example, no growth buyout shop would invest in Tesla/SpaceX and then tout how that's one of their best retursn whereas that seems to be one of Valor's favorite investment case studies. That kind of underpins the philosophy of hte firm and how they want to create value.
With that being said, they've been building our their operations group to help portcos, so a little A16z-esque and have good momentum behind them. In my opinion, it would probably be a slightly more fun place to work than a summit/TA, but with that being said, if your goal was to move onto a MF in PE, I would imagine the day to day work is a little less technical finance oriented. I'd imagine the analyst role is pretty sourcing heavy.
Thanks so much for the comprehensive answer! SB'd
Do you know anything about the typical comp structure for a post-banking associate at a place like this? Also, do you think the philosophy of the firm as you described it would help if you wanted to break into an earlier-stage VC vs. trying to break in through a JMI/Summit/TA?
Does Valor go through a HH for recruiting? If so which one?

I summered at a firm that invested as LPs in Valor's last fund. Just going reiterate the fact that Antonio has strong ties with Musk and the LPs also had the opportunity to co-invest in SpaceX and a couple other interesting businesses.
