I'd like to transfer internally to the same group in another city, likely northeast. It is something I've thought about for a long time (2nd month on the job to be precise).
It's been six months since I moved to this place for my job. As reference, I work in a product group at a BB.
It's been tough. Not having a single friend and my family here made it tough. Also, the culture (southern) here isn't something I enjoy. The pace is incredibly slow, perhaps not at work, but just in general. I chose to get into IB partly because of the tireless hustle people have which is both inspiring and contagious. The people I work with are ambitious (no doubt) and friendly, but they seem to be content with where they are (which is perfectly fine) but lack the energy and hustle I seek I guess. Also, somehow I just couldn't connect with them on a personal level. Maybe I'm just making an excuse but frankly I don't see any possibility that I'd ever become friends with my coworkers, which also it's a big disappointment because of the camaraderie I often hear you'd build with your coworkers, especially in IB. Almost everyone here grew up in the South and went school around here (UT, Duke, UNC, UVA, etc.), and they all seem to have something in common and things to talk about, except with me. During my training in NYC, I had no problem of making friends. It didn't seem hard to make friends there because I felt people enjoyed my company and vice versa. Here, it is the opposite.
On the other side, the quality of life is great. The cost of living is definitely on the lower spectrum comparing to other cities (i.e. NYC, San Fran, LA, etc.) However, I can't see myself living here in the long haul.
I KNOW I will have the conversation with my staffer/manager at my mid-year review in a week or so, but I'm not sure how I should approach the subject during my review. I don't want them to think of me as someone who is unappreciative and spoiled brat who complains about petty things when they are many who would take my job in the blink of an eye (I'm not kidding).
I would like to hear your advice. Anything is greatly appreciated (truly)!
I cannot offer any first-hand advice, but I would definitely frame this as you truly enjoying working at this bank, but wanting to be closer to family, hence you wanting to move internally to another city. Do not bring up anything related to the South or you not making friends.
As an aside, why are you having such a tough time making friends with your fellow analysts? I went to a non-target and never saw that as an impediment to befriending my fellow analysts. There is and should be more to talk about than school, even during college football season. The comraderie is what you make it. You need to do things like go out when they invite you, participate in the March Madness bracket tournament, particulate in fantasy football, join them for a Merril or Intralinks event, etc. Just my two cents.
