International tech startup internship to banking possible?
I'm going to be working abroad for a tech startup in Hong Kong, effective end of this month, for at least six months.
Does anyone have experience or know of someone who went from a tech startup background/internship to IB/PE? I'm really interested in breaking in to those avenues but have had no luck. I have three years of FP&A experience that I want to leave behind and not build on. I've had an interview for an analyst position at a boutique that I unfortunately didn't end up getting, but managed to get on my own with no outside help. I majored in finance at a non-target and my GPA was anything but stellar (low 3's).
I'm doing this because I don't think it could hurt me in any way and is much better than what I'm currently doing. I was just curious if management at banks would look at this as a plus and somewhat valuable.

Freshman year - technical good for ibanking? (Originally Posted: 02/24/2008)
So, I've tried applying to all the ibanks for summer internship, and so far, a few interviews, but nothing concrete. I have, however, received internship offers to work as a software developer in another country with a company similar to Google/IBM. I was just wondering, should I pursue this opportunity? Will it do any good when I apply for ibanks next summer? or should i keep trying to apply to ibanks? Thanks!
Keep in mind that with these kinds of questions, it's all subjective...
That being said, it seems like a cool opportunity. As a freshman, just getting an internship looks good because most of your friends will be mowing the neighbors lawns, playing xbox, and drinking mountain dew all day (or was that only me?). Just be able to articulate why you chose that over something more finance related, what you actually accomplish during the internship, what you did in your free-time abroad, etc.
Any work experience is good work experience during your Freshman summer and an opp to work abroad will be beneficial from a personal growth perspective and will serve as a good conversation starter.
I am certainly envious of people on the board who are so pro-active during their college summers. I spent my college summers coaching soccer and working at my family's hockey rinks. Good luck.
Definitely take it. Most freshmen just chill out in the summer and work at baskin robbins scooping ice cream. Any internship experience is great. But for sophomore year get something finance related. If you attend a target school and have excellent grades with internship experience you will be a good candidate.
How do I transition from tech internships to IB FT? (Originally Posted: 08/07/2009)
Okay, this is broken down into a few separate parts, but first: some background.
I have experience both in software and in finance, but my summer experience goes in order finance (research), pure software (heavy tech stuff), and then a mixture of both for this summer (financial software). My software experience was definitely "cool" (in the oh wow you did that sense and in the "okay, that's legit" sense), but so are my other two summers. I want to go the IB route for FT, since I find the software route painfully boring. I want to be in NYC (or at the very least on the east coast) for personal reasons.
My questions are: 1. To what extent should I play down my tech side when applying to IB FT? I'm pretty sure I don't come off as a nerd either in my resume or in person; I'm just afraid of being mentally pigeonholed into an IT role. Should I just list one or two bullet points for my tech experience? Should I list all my technical knowledge under skills, or leave off stuff that I'm sure won't matter (like the 10+ programming languages I know?)
Any other thoughts you guys have would also be very helpful.
like others have said, mention the tech experience is good for tech focused firms in sf. I don't think you should create another version of resume because i doubt you have one page of experience to write about in finance research
chronological.
Do a lot networking and you will be fine.
Tech Consulting Soph --> IBD SA Junior? (Originally Posted: 01/07/2013)
How would an internship with a respected (not MBB) consulting firm in the technology division look when applying for IBD SA position?
I am a sophomore at a semi-target with decent experience (couple political campaigns, hedge fund) trying to figure out this summer. Would this look good on a resume? On one hand it would be a strong brand name on my resume but the work would not really be finance related. Would I be better off looking for a more finance oriented gig at a PWM, boutique investment bank, small PE/VC or another hedge fund?
Any input would be appreciated. Thanks
deloitte tech consulting?
Yes
i know people that got offers from MBB as well as GS/MS IBD after their soph summer at deloitte. definitely take it. congrats on the offer!!!
