Investment banking reviews
I have noticed that a number of people have mentioned that it's critical to have a top ranking among one's analyst/associate class while at an investment bank.
This may be a dumb questions, but I am wondering whether analysts/associates receive something akin to a "report card" that they can show to other employers when subseqneutly looking to lateral over to a job at a different investment bank?
I know the bank that I will be working for posts a sort of "Ranking." Basically all the analysts are ranked 1st to last in many different categories. I wouldn't think of it so much as a report card as a comparison of you against your peers.
that seems ridiculous, subjective, and rife with potential problems.

Usually, associates and up spend time rating the analysts then the ratings are aggregated and used for rankings. It's kind of arbitrary, because if one associate gets pissed one time and rates an analyst extremely low, it hurts the overall rankings bad. The secret truth is most people give all analysts perfect scores at each rating, and then let HR sort it out.
it's the way it is
