I couldn't survive without my headphones. There are some VPs in my office that keep their doors open, and without my headphones I would be subjected to some really disturbing personal conversations. Also, my coworkers don't hesitate to throw stuff at me if they need my attention. I think it's obvious when your using them to be anti-social and when you're just trying to block outside noise. But as long as your boss is ok with it...then that's all that matters right?

Agree 100%. In my last role as a senior financial analyst, most of the other analysts wore headphones also and it was never an issue, but I'm wondering if it is less appropriate now that I'm a manager.

I could be wrong, but it seems like at some point it might be frowned on. I doubt many F500 executives wear headphones while they work, but who knows. I'm hoping its acceptable though because my day is ten times better when I've got them on.

I don't wear them but some people at my F500 do and there's no stigma. Seriously, you can hear some distracting BS from the other cubes that is much more of a drain on concentration. I don't consider it unprofessional but the answer is 'it depends' because what your supervisor thinks is what matters.

I wear them all day, everyday. However, I usually just have one ear bud in so I can hear if someone needs me and I always take them off when my analyst comes to talk with me.

People demand freedom of speech as a compensation for freedom of thought which they seldom use.

You have all made me feel much better about wearing headphones at work. One question - when you are managing directors / portfolio managers / senior F500 Managers, do you think you will still have the headphones on? I hope I never have to retire them.

Is it inappropriate to ask one's boss if it is ok? Would that look stupid?

UFOinsider:

Anyone here find they work better listening to music?

It depends on what I am doing. In general, the answer is yes if I am listening to something without lyrics.

I remember when I was in middle school the teacher would play music without lyrics during study hall. Eventually a song with opera came up; this caused singing and laughing. Then the music was abruptly stopped.

BTW, nice sig.
