Is it unprofessional to wear headphones at work?
I'm much more productive when I'm listening to music but I also don't want to send the wrong message. What do you think? Do any of you listen to music at work?
I'm a mid level manager at a F500 by the way..
I couldn't survive without my headphones. There are some VPs in my office that keep their doors open, and without my headphones I would be subjected to some really disturbing personal conversations. Also, my coworkers don't hesitate to throw stuff at me if they need my attention. I think it's obvious when your using them to be anti-social and when you're just trying to block outside noise. But as long as your boss is ok with it...then that's all that matters right?
Agree 100%. In my last role as a senior financial analyst, most of the other analysts wore headphones also and it was never an issue, but I'm wondering if it is less appropriate now that I'm a manager.
I could be wrong, but it seems like at some point it might be frowned on. I doubt many F500 executives wear headphones while they work, but who knows. I'm hoping its acceptable though because my day is ten times better when I've got them on.
Same as above - headphones can really save you when you need to grind something out. As long as your music isn't playing so loud that you can't hear the clients calling.
I don't wear them but some people at my F500 do and there's no stigma. Seriously, you can hear some distracting BS from the other cubes that is much more of a drain on concentration. I don't consider it unprofessional but the answer is 'it depends' because what your supervisor thinks is what matters.
I wear them all day, everyday. However, I usually just have one ear bud in so I can hear if someone needs me and I always take them off when my analyst comes to talk with me.
This, I used to jump up pretty bad when I had two headphones and someone came from behind. Also, how can you watch videos and other things without them? Essential.
Yeah, I've almost cried a couple times on the days when I forgot them.
What is it with VPs that talk loud and leave the door open so everyone can hear exactly how pathetic they are?
It's fine - just don't wear them all day every day
You have all made me feel much better about wearing headphones at work. One question - when you are managing directors / portfolio managers / senior F500 Managers, do you think you will still have the headphones on? I hope I never have to retire them.
Maybe the higher up you are the less "respectable" they would be. I would also assume at that time though that you would have your own office, so it renders them obsolete.
A couple of years back our bank gifted a new set of Bose earphones for every employee. If that doesn't condone the use of headphones at work, I don't know what does..
Is it inappropriate to ask one's boss if it is ok? Would that look stupid?
nah brah
I will wear them after business hours or on weekends but not between 9AM and 5PM Monday-Friday. But I'm pretty conservative and traditional, and the firm also has a rule on it.
Anyone here find they work better listening to music?
It depends on what I am doing. In general, the answer is yes if I am listening to something without lyrics.
I remember when I was in middle school the teacher would play music without lyrics during study hall. Eventually a song with opera came up; this caused singing and laughing. Then the music was abruptly stopped.
BTW, nice sig.
Hey man, there's more fish in the sea
PMs do not keep headphones in
Headphones with no music...
I've seen some people wear Beats by Dre in the office
Beats by dre are fucking awesome. Tiesto's club life podcast + dre beats = ripping through insane amounts of work. Every employee everywhere should get a pair.

can you get away with wearing headphones at work? I hate having to listen to everyone else's banal chatter.
They're usually fine... just not all the time. There are times when you'll want to be aware of what's going on around you.
try just using 1
I usually plug them in after dinner-ish...
what about ear plugs?
