Is My Work Experience Adequate For An M7 Or T15 MBA?
Sorry for the long post, here's my tl;dr: I am a sales representative for Oracle Corporation, selling enterprise software, aiming for a M7 MBA to get MBB
Hi there,
So I graduated from USC with a degree in Philosophy and got a 3.69 GPA.
Upon graduation, I began working at Oracle Corporation as a Business Development Consultant (BDC) for 1.5 years, and then recently got promoted to Applications Sales Representative (ASR). My current official title is "Enterprise Account Manager"
Essentially, my job as a BDC was lead generation, and I have a closing role in my current ASR position. As a salesman, I sell Oracle enterprise software and cloud-based applications, so like middleware, database systems, SaaS, CRM, ERP, supply chain management software, etc. My goal is to get promoted to a regional sales manager position where I manage a team of BDCs or ASRs.
I understand that the typical feeder roles into M7 programs including consulting and banking (and maybe accounting), and that my job itself doesn't scream "ideal M7." I understand that sales isn't a typical feeder role. Having said that, I do work in Silicon Valley, at a top-tier tech firm that's a famous/respected/well recognized/prestigious fortune 100 company, and have a position that's coveted by salespeople of all walks of life. I assume Oracle is a respected name/brand.
If I can get a 700+ gmat score, which I think can, (I'm doing well on prep tests), do you think I have a shot at at an M7 school, despite me being in enterprise software sales instead of being a banker or consultant? Or is the harsh fact that my job isn't simply "prestigious enough," that sales isn't viewed as respectfully by adcomms as consulting, STEM work, or banking? Or that Oracle's prestige is inferior to companies like Facebook, Amazon, Microsoft, or Google, and that it's a must for me to network my way into a "superior" tech company before aiming for an M7? (I got hit up by a Google sales recruiter but was rejected at the final interview stage)
(I'm sure many of you know, but just in case you didn't, here's some background on my employer: Oracle is ranked number 9 on the fortune 500 top tech firms, in case you weren't familiar with it: Larry Ellison, Oracle's Chairman and Co-Founder, is the 9th wealthiest person in the world)
Of course, since I only have around 2 years of experience, I'd want to stick out at my job for around 2 more years or so, hopefully getting promoted to sales manager first.
I want to get into an M7 because MBB consulting in my dream job, although for the purpose of the MBA app, I'd say I want to transition from high-tech sales into general marketing, to make my app/story more simple
Sorry for the long post, here's my tl;dr again: I am a sales representative for Oracle Corporation, selling enterprise software, aiming for a M7 MBA to get MBB
Edit: Just one follow-up question. I'm planning on applying 2 years out, after I hopefully become a sales manager. But in case that doesn't pan out and I remain a sales rep (my official title is Account Manager), would it still be feasible to apply to M7 (and T15), assuming my GMAT is up to par?
should be in play for MBA business schools ">M7/T15 if you can get a 730+ GMAT
Thanks! Again, I've been working for around 2 years, and my plan was to wait a year or two more until I got promoted to sales manager, and then apply for an MBA.
But say for some reason I didn't get the sales manager position, would I still have a shot at MBA business schools ">M7/T15 as a sales rep/account manager? Of course I'd aim for a 730+ GMAT whether i became manager or not.
Thanks!
