No real advantage to my knowledge - they screen resumes at the deadline.

That said, you should plan on networking... there is a big advantage to it. And frankly I'd be shocked if you get a SA offer without networking of some kind. This advice applies to students at targets, non-targets and everywhere else...

Great, thanks. It's just a hypothetical scenario and I do plan on networking. Just wondering if networking would affect when you apply.

You just need to submit the resume / app before the deadline. Anything early won't win you brownie points...

Focus on the networking. Ideally, you should develop a couple contacts you feel comfortable with enough for them to review edit / your resume.

There should be other folks you network with that you send the resume to directly when you apply. They should probably ask for this...

Then you send a quick "Hey I applied through on campus, but here's the latest copy of my resume. Thanks again for all your help, and let me know if there's anyone else in your group that I can speak with..." You get the idea.

Unless you believe there could be a significantly beneficial change to your resume between now and whenever you plan to apply, I would recommend submitting your application early for two primary reasons:

  1. As previously mentioned, some banks do review applicants on a rolling basis.
  2. If a bank chooses to accelerate its recruiting cycle (an occurrence that has been happening more frequently in recent years as banks attempt to keep up with the expedited recruiting timelines of competing firms), you will benefit from having your application already submitted whenever the firm goes to review the resumes that it already has on hand.

Thanks. Could you also comment on my previous questions? I heard after you get the first round interview, you are on your own. To what extent is that statement true, can contacts bat for you during the final decision making process?

I wouldn’t say that’s 100% true, but the general consensus is that once you get an interview/super day there’s a much bigger weight placed on performance, which I would agree with. However, if you have a group head that’s pulling for you, then that can swing the odds in your favor. These type of strong connections are rare though.

Looking to apply for SA 2021, but I have yet to start networking. Do I still have time?
