“Let’s keep in touch”

Just had a good call with a prospective employer that I’m stoked about. Sent him a thank you email for his time and he said likewise and that we should keep in touch.
What should I do to keep in touch and how long should I give it?
I was thinking about sending him an article or something and letting him know my thoughts in a week or two, or maybe a happy holidays email?
Not sure how to approach this. Any suggestions?

100% agree with CapRateSlapper, if he said lets keep in touch I would give it at least one month.

A few questions that need answering:

1. How senior is he or she? If its an MD, you should start networking with others as opposed to follow up in the short-term. If it is an Analyst, maybe reach out again in a month or two.

2. When do you want to work for this company? Your next outreach should heavily depend on when you would ideally start and what their hiring process timeline looks like.

3. Do you have any other relationships at the firm? If you have already networked extensively and see this person as your primary POC, then maybe all you really need to do is wait two months and reach out again and tell him or her you really want to work at their firm.

Best of luck to you!

Thanks Deal Team Six.

He was on the C-Suite and I’ve connected with other analysts at the firm as well as another high up. He mentioned an internship position opening up next year, so I’ll follow up then.

I think you're supposed to read between the lines and hear "I like you, but we don't have a role for you right now."  Which means reaching out in a couple weeks is way too soon.  Once every 3-4 months is probably appropriate.

Relax bro. Keep in touch means there's nothing now, but may be something in the future.

Wait for them to reach out to you. If you don't hear anything, send him a note in a couple months to check in.

Kinda like dating - don't be that needy guy.

Funniest

No no no. Everyone here is wrong. Dont listen to anyone. When someone says lets keep in touch, that means they want you to google their address and show up every day or every other day. He clearly has given you an open invitation to show up for dinner and potentially breakfast. Please also be assertive, he's clearly trying to gauge if you have it in you to keep following up. Also please keep us all informed of how this goes.

So, I don't think you should try and "schedule" this, reach out when you have a reason to do so (hint, be sure to come up with reasons every so often). Some "reasons"

- You notice a job posted at the firm

- You hear some news about their firm (ideally positive lol)

- You have news in your life related to your professional/growth development (I'm not sure if you are in college or not, if you are.. TONS of these possible)

- You see an interesting news/deal something that is relevant.. (I would not just "Send".. I would send and ask a question, or inquire if this is good news/opportunity for the firm")

- You are attending a conference or event, and want to know if they are going (if they are, try and say hello at the event, if not, you can "update" them on the event after the fact)

You get the idea! To be very honest, if you have one of these in two weeks, send, if it takes a month, send. If you wait more than two months... you lose relevance. Good luck!

Honestly if I were in your position, I would try to keep in contact with his family and close friends, because c-suite execs are probably too busy to actually keep in contact with business associates. This way, you can learn more about him and his personality through the people he interacts with frequently. For example, offer to teach his wife yoga, pick up his kids from school or be his sister's personal masseur.
