Life on the edge in finance
Does anyone else realize how fragile your role is in finance? Every year, you become obsolete as who you are and what you were in that past year is now old news. The role gets younger as a new generation prepares to enter the spot you are leaving, as a '1st year' or '2nd year'. I find myself preparing my figurative bug out bag whenever I start a new role. Bankers count up every year as if they're aware of the inevitable.
In finance, you live life on the edge. Employers want you to jump through hoops, and beg to be there. Then once you're there, you have to remind them about how lucky you are to be there. If you're a teacher or gov worker, it's easy to imagine being a 20-30 year vet someday, given your health doesn't go.
Do you find yourself thinking about your finances long-term, not just for planning's sake, emergencies, or life after work? But really think hard and long about that potential day where you don't dodge the gun and end up getting sniped by some young gunner or upper asshole? It's basically like paying a premium to do it.
