Firms with a strong Physical fitness culture

Seeking to join a firm with a great culture, where one can enjoy free time working out without concerns about appearing 'not busy enough.' I heard from an associate at a BB that he faced criticism for being muscular and was told, 'Clearly, we're not giving you enough work for you to be this big,' and was subsequently overloaded with tasks. Fortunately, he exited and is more relaxed now… but it sounds like a nightmare. I am doing Asset Management for my junior year internship, but looking to recruit for IB full-time! Hoping to chat with professionals who can help me out.

You're not going to find this and I think you're reading way too much into one comment... you can never control for some random VP/DIR who dislikes you for some reason. IB is not the seat to pursue if you prioritize great culture and a lot of free time.

Like anything else that's important to you, you will make time to work out. It might be 7:45-8:30am, or during dinner, and sometimes you will just need to sacrifice a workout to get sleep. But no group is going to give you total free rein to do what you want - whether it's working out, seeing your GF, happy hours -  whenever and as much as you want. If you want control over your time, stay in AM.

What a crazy comment, haha. Carving out 35-60 minutes daily shouldn't be difficult if you're dedicated to health and fitness. I know everyone gets slammed with work in IB and at banks, but like I said, if you're dedicated, you'll make time.

The guy who said that must not work and assumes having muscles means he's spending 2 to 3 hours in the gym. Half the guys on my desk at a Chicago OMM have protein powder under their desks, and we have CorePower and hard-boiled eggs in the office.

It sounds particularly funny and ironic hearing that the BB associate assumes being jacked means you're not busy enough when the quant traders at my shop are drinking protein shakes, lifting in the morning, and slinging size at open before settling into research for the rest of the day.

Agree - it’s cope.

You could get into unbelievable shape just going Friday-Sunday (assuming wfh Friday) and finding 45 minutes at any point between Monday - Thursday to hit 4x a week.

The people who aren’t in shape in banking would probably be in the same exact shape they’re in working a 9-4

True, especially after building a solid foundation throughout the years, you can get away with 45 minutes of weight lifting a week, with good intensity 4 times a week.

I wish more people would realize this. Most people I know that are out of shape would be out of shape regardless of which profession they're in because they have unhealthy habits - full stop. If you eat/drink like shit, you'll eventually look like shit too. Most of being in shape is what you do outside of the gym rather than in it, assuming you have a halfway decent schedule of progressive overload.

I want to join a firm with group runs in the morning and BJJ/Muay Thai sparring after work. Group culture is king. Train together, win together.
