Litigation Financing Role
I recently got contacted for an interview at a Litigation Finance firm and would like to learn more about this career path and how it compares to similar roles in IB/HF (work/life, comp, exit ops). From what I can tell it seems like the firm provides funding for companies going through litigation but also invests in litigation as an asset class. Would appreciate any insight.
Do you know what the role is? What is your background? Most positions at legal financing are for litigators. They may want to hire someone with experience in distressed assets.
Investment Analyst - description includes assessing potential investments to supplement the legal due diligence process. My background is primarily in equities but I do have some experience with fund management.
Litigation finance is still at its early stage, and the companies are still exploring various ways to create excess returns. They may need an analyst to do general due diligence on companies/industries or financial analysis of their portfolios. Some are getting into principal investing; for example, Omni Bridgeway has recently hired someone as head of distressed debt. Are you going through a third-party recruiter?
That's what I am gathering from the job description. Seems interesting but very new so there isn't a ton of information out there. Yes, third-party recruiter.
I am sure the recruiter doesn't know much about the role as well. If you are interested in special situations, might as well just have an intro call with the company.
I hear that the culture is very collaborative (again, still a new industry, and everyone has just a piece of the puzzle), and the work-life balance is decent.
Any idea on comp or exit ops?
Both data not widely available yet. But I would assume that the comp will be on par with law firms/HFs (obviously, your experience and the company size matter), and you are likely to be liked by special situations/event-driven shops in the long run. It's a unique experience/skillset to have.
