Looking for Roommate (Philly Burbs/Main line)
Hi All,
I'm a 30-year-old guy looking for a male roommate who is okay with living in the Philly burbs. I've been mainly looking at apartment complexes in Conshy/West Conshy (Riverwalk, Londonburry, The Courts at Spring Mill Station), Devon (Old Forge Xing), and Wayne (Glenhardie) but am open to other areas as well. I just need somewhere with a trail I can run on. I don't have pets and would prefer living with someone that doesn't have pets either.
I've been working remotely and I think it's probably going to stay that way a while. My office is in Center City so I won't be going down there unless I absolutely have to. The city tax is very unappealing to me. I have an FP&A-type role at a F50 healthcare company with a good career trajectory (aiming for a promotion next year).
I'm very organized and keep things clean so looking for the same. I'm looking to be friends with my roommate as well. I'm always open to meeting new people. I love music, movies, investing, craft beer (especially sours), and technology. I play video games as well but not frequently.
Have you considered co-living? Bungalow and Common are two big names in the space.
I have never used it, because I have learned to love having my own apartment. Seems like a good way to meet other people but without the commitment of co-signing a lease together.
I have not so thank you for the idea :)
I'll check it out
Why on earth would you want to live on the Main Line as a 30 year old single guy?
I figured this was coming - LOL
Unless I'm consistently going into the office (which I most likely won't be) I don't see the point of living in the city. The city tax essentially becomes the "fun tax" (what I pay to have easier access to fun stuff in the city). I could still take Septa into the city and do fun stuff on the weekends (or just drive in, which I have done before). I'm sure the Septa rides, in aggregate, would be cheaper than incurring the city tax (I will find out the city tax delta after this year due to the way my time reporting is set up). Going to different restaurants and coffee shops on weekdays doesn't appeal to me since I like cooking and don't drink coffee often. The main benefit would be that the dating pool is (for the most part) better in the city. There are amazing women everywhere though. It would definitely be easier to bring back women to your place when living in the city. But I'm okay with getting an Uber once or twice
Gotcha, I get not wanting to live in the city, just weird for me since I grew up on the Main Line and it was 100% families and retirees haha. At least there are plenty of cougars at the local Whole Foods if that's your thing
I recently moved from CC to the main line (office is out here) and bro, that first paycheck without the wage tax was a thing of beauty.
It should not be hard to find an affordable 1-bed in the philly market, try looking on craigslist/zillow for smaller privately owned properties rather than the big properties you listed. I don't know anybody renting in the philly suburbs but its totally doable in the nicest sections of center city (and also probably a lot more fun, even if you have to pay higher wage taxes).
Gotcha - I guess fun is one of those things that's hard to measure and I've never considered myself much of a "city guy". lol
The crime rate isn't the worst but it's not good. I'd like somewhere quiet too and I'm not sure if that's feasible in the city.
I've looked on Craiglist in the past and agree with you there. I've been using mainly Apartments.com but have also used Zillow. The big complexes always seem to have issues due to bad management companies. I would like some sort of community where I could meet people easily versus living in a house.
Fees for having a car in the city can get pricey as well. My sister lives in Center City and her roommate pays $250/month to have her car there. That seems pretty steep to me. I definitely want to keep my car in order to attend family gatherings and visit friends since Septa isn't that great (imo).
