looking further then only for the "big names"...

Hey,

as I am studying in a city in europe which is not really famous for their financial sector (we mostly only do have house banking services, have a large GDP in other sectors though - mainly in producing and tourism) I´m really curious to work as an intern in a different country.

When talking about asset management, hedge funds, investment banking most of the time only the real big names come up because they openly search for summer analysts from Uni every year.

As I am a very realistic and analytical person I know that the odds are not the highest to get into one of the top firms at the first try, therefore I´m constantly looking to get my foot into somewhere else..

The question is just, where to start? Where do I find these small to middle sized companies in the financial sector, that might not even openly search for a intern but to whom I just could send a email to get in touch with the people directly?

Do you have any advice on that? It´s really a bit difficult when you don´t live in the big cities or near them where there are tons of firms .. networking could be done better, but it is what it is, I don´t stop until I have my internship for next summer :)

Looking forward to hear from you!

Finding jobs in smaller companies that barely advertise is down to research online and on forums like WSO. Create a target list and hit up every single career section on their websites. you could also check job/internship aggregators (indeed or similar, they exist in pretty much every language and country). There are various ways of doing this: 1) If the target company is not in your city, mention you can be there if required at any point in time or that you can interview over the phone or Skype/facetime/the local company office.

2) Act like you are already in the city of your target sector or company. Flights and travel across the EU are cheaper than ever and this shouldn't be a big deal as long as you are allowed to live/work in that country. I landed a job in London once after I moved away. Just flew back and acted like I am a local.

3) Networking. People in Europe know each other within an industry and companies - even smaller ones - do not work just in their town. Hit up LinkedIn, networking/career events, ask family friends and your school contacts for referrals.

Thank you very much...! Regarding networking, I worked on that very deep since last semester, always a thing that I neglected. I only was interested in finance and therefore I never went to any of the various speeches from company CEO´s because they were more from the producing sector (but still very well known firms). I go their all the time now and just talk to everyone I see...

Even if it is a company that isn't within "financial services" or BB - you can still have a great finance career at that place. They have corp. dev, strategy, deal teams, fintech/innovation labs, etc.

There is no shame in working at Walmart, Target, GM, Ford or similar companies even though they are not a pure BB. In fact, it might even be easier to get to the top of a firm in a finance role outside of a BB. (I had several jobs in non-banking firms and if you are actually good at what you do, there probably won't be many people who can keep up/compete with you).
